Larry's obituary

Lawrence David Purkey went home to Jesus on December 3, 2020 at age 70.

Larry was born to Harold & Laura Purkey on May 4, 1950 in Detroit, Michigan. Larry grew up in Shawnee, OK and made the most important decision of his life when he chose to follow Jesus in 1955. He was a smart kid who loved his family and music.

Upon graduating from Shawnee High School in 1968, he earned a bachelor's degree in Music Education from the University Oklahoma in 1973 and completed his master's degree in Church Music at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1981.

Larry met his wife, Kena in 1968 at a church activity. They married in 1971 and went on to have 2 children, Dave and Jonathan. In addition to being a dedicated and loving husband and father, Larry also loved to lead people into the presence of the Lord. He faithfully served the Lord in Worship Ministry for 45 years, serving in local churches in Oklahoma, California, Texas, and Missouri, and also taking multiple trips oversees to minister in various foreign countries. As a part of this passion for worship, Larry was a part of various regional Singing Men groups in Texas and also the Centurymen. Recently, he continued to lead worship as a volunteer in the Worship Ministry at Parkside Baptist Church in Denison, TX, serving alongside his son, Dave, who is the Worship Pastor at Parkside.

Throughout his entire life, he held an unwavering faith in God, which he shared with those who surrounded him. He was intentional about growing his relationship with the Lord every day through prayer, Scripture reading and memorization. His hope and prayer was that everyone would know the peace and hope of Jesus Christ.

Larry joins his mother Laura, father Harold, step-father Jim, and brother Calvin in Heaven. He is survived by his wife Kena of Sherman, TX, son Dave Purkey and wife Meagan of Denison, TX, son Jonathan Purkey and wife Jenna of Midland, TX, sister Jenny Krepps and husband Ken of Wagoner, OK, and grandchildren Jackson, Madison, Hudson, Jason, and Ranger. He is also survived by a large and loving network of extended family.

Isaiah 40:31
"...but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint."
