Larry was my golf partner for life. A day doesn't go by that I don't have a memory of our partnership on the golf course and off. I have never met anyone that loved life like Lar and I was so lucky to be a part of it for decades. He's making nothing but pars and birdies in heaven. Love you Lar!!!
meeting Larry was one of the best learning moments in my life, and always enjoyed a round of golf together.... RIP

Dear Carole, Christina and Lauren. I just learned of Larry's passing today. I am so very sorry for your loss. Your husband/dad remains one of my most favorite memories of Woodway and all of the years that we were there. Always a smile on his face. Always there to give you a hug. He was the light of the room wherever he went. Because everybody loved him. How could you not?

My dad had a special relationship with Larry. He loved spending time with him, and it was obvious when you watched them together. They are undoubtedly in heaven together, drinking a scotch and playing endless rounds of golf. My condolences to you all. You are in my thoughts. Larry was one in a million.

Love,

Joe

Dear Carol, my condolences and love to you and your family. I so enjoyed Larry’s friendship and leadership at SGC. As the Greens Chair, I was gifted with the privilege to learn from. and also enjoy so much golf with Larry.  He led a great turnaround at the club.  Those memories will be with me forever.   My best to you, Carol.  Don

My Condolences to the family. I knew Larry from Silvermine Golf Club he was a great guy. Going to Miss you 😘 Larry from JB
Sorry to hear such sad news. I met Larry back in the 80s on a flight to a GCSAA conference. Then we both served on the Tri State Turf Foundation together. It was very easy to get into a conversation about turf or anything with him.  You were one of the good guys. RIP Larry. 🙏⛳️

On behalf of our family, we want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the staff and membership at Silvermine Golf Club for honoring our dad, Larry, in such a meaningful way. Seeing the flag flown at half-staff throughout this weekend as a tribute to him truly touched our hearts. Thank you for helping us celebrate his life and legacy in a way that reflects the deep connections he built within the golf community.
Deepest sympathy from one of Larry’s original golf buddy and colleague from those golden days at Philadelphia CC (with brother Don) and Merion (Richie Valentine). Lew Morgan

Sad to hear of Larry's passing - way too young.  When I came back to the Met area from Michigan Larry was one of the first to greet meet at a Met Superintendent meeting with a great big smile.   He was always very kind and gracious.

The time you knew Larry on earth will be a blink in how long you will know him in Heaven.  God bless.

He had a Heart of Gold and will always be remembered as a true friend!  Rest in His Arms my Friend!
Thinking of what a wonderful man my Uncle Larry was. What an incredible legacy he has left behind. Sending Aunt Carole, Christina, Lauren and the whole family all my love. XO

11/19/24 STATEMENT FROM THE PAKKALA FAMILY:

Today, we honor the life of Larry Pakkala, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend to so many. At 72 years old, Larry lived a life filled with passion, generosity, and love. Known affectionately as “Chief,” he was a leader in every sense of the word, giving 1000% of himself to everything he pursued.

Larry’s career as a golf course superintendent was a reflection of his devotion to excellence. Beyond the greens, he championed causes close to his heart, dedicating himself to research and charitable organizations like the Lions Club, Yale Eye Research, Tri-State Turfgrass Research, and the Audubon Society. He lived with purpose, blending hard work with heartfelt care for people and the world around him.

What truly set Larry apart was his kindness and zest for life. He had an uncanny ability to connect with everyone, whether you were the CEO of a corporation or a member of his grounds crew. To Larry, everyone was a friend, and he treated all with equal warmth and respect.

Larry’s legacy lives on in his wife, two daughters, and three grandsons, who were his greatest pride and joy. As we say goodbye, we take comfort in knowing that his final act of generosity—donating his organs—will allow others to live more fully, just as he did.

Larry’s love for life, leadership, golf, and the people he cherished will never be forgotten. We are eternally grateful for the time we had with him and the many lives he touched along the way.

Thank you, Larry, for showing us how to live, love, and give selflessly. You will forever be in our hearts.

"I have a tee time booked in heaven on the grandest course of all. And we'll go golfing once again, chasing that little white ball."
