LaMar's obituary

Lamar Lee Jones, Jr., son of the late Lamar Jones, Sr. and Barbara Jones, was born on Tuesday, January 10, 1956 in Chicago, Illinois. The second eldest of 10 children and the eldest son, he was affectionately known as “Leemont” by family and friends. Lamar attended the public schools of Cook County and graduated from Dunbar High School in 1974 where he excelled in football and track and field.

On December 12, 1979, Lamar joined the United States Marine Corps where he served for 11 years and received numerous awards for good conduct and expertise in pistol and riflery. While stationed in California, he met his wife of 42 years, Sheryl Denise Jones, on a day he fondly described as rainy and overcast. Just as he first laid eyes on her, the clouds parted, and sunlight broke through, illuminating Sheryl's face at that perfect moment. They were later married and blessed with two daughters, Monique and Barbara Jones, and years of laughter. Following his honorable discharge from the military, Staff Sergeant Jones became an employee of Southern California Edison where he worked as a Security Officer for 24 years.

Lamar accepted Jesus Christ as his personal savior as an adult at Second Missionary Baptist Church and increasingly became involved in the church where he served as a deacon. He was also a faithful member of Bethany Missionary Baptist Church and Rising Star Missionary Baptist Church.

Lamar was an avid bowler, competitive Spades and board-game player, loved music and could be heard singing wherever he walked, a movie and popcorn connoisseur, dedicated “girl-dad”, beloved “PaPa” to his grandchildren, and devout fan of all Chicago sports teams. Lamar was known wherever he went because of his ability to talk with anyone. His spirit of strength and resilience was evident through the encouraging words he shared with those fortunate enough to cross paths with him. He will be remembered by many for his beautiful ability to tell a captivating story, crack a joke, and selflessly love those he claimed as family, both biological and chosen.

On October 15, 2024, Lamar took his final rest. His joyous nature will forever be cherished in the lives of his wife, Sheryl Denise Jones; daughters, Monique LaShell Jones and Barbara Jacquelyn Jones; grandchildren, Aryianna Tyliaah Johnson, Anias D’kari Brown, and Daelyn Asaiah Brown; siblings, Theresa Jones (deceased), Vivian Jones (deceased), Derrick Jones, Sr. (Cheryl Jones), Vince Jones, Sr. (Rosa Jones), Denise Jones-Evans (Mark Evans), Gwendolyn Johnson (Ronauldo Johnson), Maurice Jones (Tarhonda Jones), Jeremy Jones, and Sparkle Jones; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins whom he loved dearly; and a host of devoted friends, many of whom became family.

Lamar left an indelible imprint on the world and his absence will be deeply felt, yet the legacy he leaves behind will continue to inspire and guide those he loved.
