Personal note from Sara (Kyla's mom)

Kyla passed away due to kratom toxicity. Kratom is a legal supplement often used for energy, pain relief, and support with anxiety or depression. While it is thought to be safe, it can have dangerous interactions with other medications—especially antidepressants like Prozac, which Kyla was taking.

Kratom contains compounds that affect the brain’s opioid receptors, and it also influences serotonin and other brain chemicals. When combined with antidepressants, it can interfere with how the body processes medications, sometimes leading to toxic levels. This can cause serotonin syndrome, heart problems, and breathing difficulties, all of which can be fatal.

Kyla wasn’t taking more than the recommended amount, and she didn't think she was doing anything reckless. This was an unintended and tragic reaction between two substances that aren’t meant to be mixed. It’s important to know that even though kratom is a natural product, it can have unpredictable and serious effects on the heart, nervous system, and liver—especially when combined with other medications. In this case, that interaction had heartbreaking consequences.
