Kyla's obituary

Dr. Kyla Ann Lutz Collins, 34, of Columbus, originally from Folsomville, IN., passed away at 12:50 p.m., Tuesday, July 4, 2023 at IU Health University Hospital in Indianapolis.

Kyla was born January 31, 1989, the daughter of Bob Lutz and Stacy Beavers. She grew up in Folsomville, graduating from Boonville High School in 2007.

She attended Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, where she received a Bachelor of Science degree, double-majoring in Biomedical Engineering and Mathematics. In 2017 she received a Doctor of Philosophy in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

While at Rose-Hulman, she met her husband, Ben Collins. They were married December 14, 2013 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. They lived in Chapel Hill while Kyla finished her degree, then moved to Columbus, Ind., in 2018.

Their first son, Carter David, was born January 28, 2015, and their second son, Lincoln Robert, was born April 15, 2021.

Kyla was a Research Scientist at Eli Lilly in Indianapolis, where she was involved in researching diabetes and complications relating to diabetes.

Kyla was always the person who motivated and brought out the best in everyone as a pitcher, a teammate, a colleague, a classmate, and most importantly, as a spouse. She could always turn a negative into a positive, and was extremely hard-working and passionate in everything she did.

She lit up a room wherever she went, and would never take “no” for an answer. She pursued her dream of becoming a biomedical engineer, and went above and beyond the call of duty in everything she did.

Kyla raised two amazing boys, and they were the light of her world.

Kyla is survived by her husband, Ben; her sons, Carter and Lincoln; her dad, Bob (Rita Payne) Lutz; a sister, Brooke (Justin Simpson) Goings; brothers, Ryan Lutz and Brandon Lutz; her grandmother, Donna “Mimi” Beavers; her uncles, Wade (Angie) Beavers and Jimmy (Marian) Lutz Jr.; her aunt Cathy Johnson; and her great-aunt Mary Lynn Roberts.

She was preceded in death by her mom, Stacy Beavers, in 2021; her grandfather on her mother’s side, Gary Beavers; her grandparents on her father’s side, Jim and Donna Lutz; her great-grandparents on her mother’s side, WF “Lil’ Papaw” and Imogene “Mamaw” Beavers; and her great-grandmother, Melba “Mamaw” Carter.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 8, 2023 at St. Clement Catholic Church, 422 E Sycamore St, Boonville, IN 47601.

Visitation will be held on Friday, July 7, 2023 from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Koehler Funeral Home, 304 East Main Street, Boonville, IN 47601. Visitation will continue from 9:00 a.m. until service time on Saturday, July 8, 2023 at the church.

Burial will follow at Plainview Memorial Cemetery in Boonville.
