Kye's obituary
Kye Baughman, age 90, resident of Steger passed away Friday December 23, 2022 after a five month battle with Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma. Kye was born on October 3, 1932 in Columbia, Mississippi to Mattie and Henry Baughman. He was the middle child of seven and enjoyed his childhood on his family’s farm. He married his wife, Barbara, on October 19, 1954 and the couple went on to have six children; John P. Baughman (Janice), Tommy T. Baughman, George K. Baughman, Elizabeth B. Oldenburg (Donald), the late Jacalyn J. Baughman, and Jennifer L. Baughman.
A hardworking man, Kye, worked for Owens-Illinois Glass Company for 32 years making medicine bottles. In later life he enjoyed using his pickup truck to haul merchandise for Kmart as well as maintaining the lawn of Scrementi’s Restaurant in Steger.
Kye served in the Army and was a POW for 9 months. He was very proud of his service to our Country and wore his POW baseball cap with honor everywhere he went.
Kye was well known for his friendliness. He wasn’t capable of meeting a stranger, everyone instantly became a friend. It was impossible to go anywhere with him without someone recognizing him and stopping to have a conversation. He loved to talk.
He loved all things snacks, especially Cheetos, and loved watching Old Westerns while spending time with his dog, Henry. Often times sharing his snacks with the dog.
He spent many hours in his backyard during the summer planting a vegetable garden and then watching it grow. He loved giving away his fruits and vegetables to friends and family at the end of each season. He was always especially proud of his watermelons and would boast that “only the best” would be given a watermelon.
Kye is survived by five of his six children as well as his 18 grandchildren, and many great grandchildren. He was proceeded in death by his wife Barbara, in 2011, as well as his daughter, Jacalyn, in 2020.
Kye will be deeply missed.
A brief visitation will be held at First Baptist Church in Sauk Village, Illinois on January 26, 2023 from 10:30am-12:30pm with a brief Service to follow. Pastor Barry Lee will officiate. A private interment will follow the conclusion of the services. Flowers may be sent to the Church at 22240 Burnham Avenue, Sauk Village, IL 60411
