So sorry about Kirk. 🙁 I remember Kirk playing in Clancy’s Pub in Durango back in 1981 when I worked there. He was just getting started playing in front of people at the time. I was envious. I watched him become a productive and giving member of the community over the years. He was a great example of what that looks like. He also played at our wedding reception in 2001. Gonna be sorely missed but fondly remembered. RIP Kirk.

I was in the super loud college rock ‘n’ roll band in the late 80s and Kirk was hosting the Clancy’s jam. We’d always go down there and play way too loud and Kirk would tell us to turn down. Later, I got a chance to work with him with Tim Sullivan, then for several years in Kirk’s Blues band. Memories include hauling gear up the stairs at the Pelicans Nest, late night basement gigs at Scootin Blues, and a New years gig in Silverton at Pride of the West before it burned down.
Musicians tend to be an unruly undisciplined lot but Kirk was the exception to the rule. He was one of the kindest people I’ve ever met, but also with an extraordinarily keen sense of humor.
Most of the time I worked with Kirk he was single and there always seemed to be a part of him searching for partnership. He seemed to really reach his stride when he met Mary Jo, and I was so happy for him to have found that love in his life.
One thing Kirk taught me is to live with passion. He loved his art and his pinstriping and his music and he’s been a real example on how one can make a living doing what they love. RIP blues man. I’ll never let you go.
