Trip explanation - A note from Kim’s daughter, Shelby Courtney:

In July of 2023 my Dad came to visit me in NC. He was checking on me while I was going through radiation for Stage 4 Oral Cancer and I was absolutely miserable. Seeing him was like a breath of fresh air. We took a leisurely walk on the trail by my house and had a long talk. Dad was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer at the same time as me - early 2023. While my cancer prognosis was promising, his was not. He was coming to terms with the fact that this cancer would eventually end his life. I asked him if there was anything he felt like he wanted or needed to do before he died. He said he had lived a really full life and done pretty much everything he’d ever wanted to do. There was only one thing he wanted to accomplish before dying and that was to take a father-daughter beach trip with me and my sister, Jamie. Obviously this was easier said than done. I was in the middle of cancer treatment and he was just about to start. But he felt confident there would be a day when he was done with treatment and we would be able to relax on the beach together and take the vacation we deserved. That we would sit on the beach, my dad and his daughters (who he always said were his biggest success) and just enjoy the beauty around us. Jamie and I never got to take a trip with our dad as adults. Dad knew this and wanted to make that memory with us before passing on.

In June 2024, my dad’s health really took a turn for the worse. Treatment wasn’t giving him the results he wanted and we knew the end was close. My husband and I went to visit him during this time. At night when Dad was falling asleep he would say “we’ve got to get you and your sister to the beach baby, I don’t have much longer”.

Dad is having a direct cremation and there will be no celebration of life, per his wishes. But I intend to honor his last request and take a father-daughter beach trip with my sister. Dad will be attending spiritually and we will sit on the beach in his honor. We will celebrate his life on this trip and make the final memory he intended to give us. Help us finish his last request and send us to the beach. 🙏
