Kevin's obituary

Kevin Patrick Boylen died at the age of fifty-six on December 21, 2023, in Cartersville, Georgia, too far from his beloved wife, Sarah Machaka, and their children, Chani (20), Maya (18) and Marley (8), and step-daughter Debbie Machaka (25), who reside in Nairobi, Kenya.

After nearly thirty years living in Kenya, Kevin was working in the United States as a commercial trucker for Empire Express Inc. based in Memphis, Tennessee in order to eventually move the family to the U.S. to complete their education. It was in the line of duty where he met his unfortunate fate.

Kevin was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on March 29, 1967 to Dr. Carl Thomas Boylen of Louisville, Kentucky and Alice Lois (Cota) Boylen of Owingsville, Kentucky, and grew up in Malibu, California along with his sister, Debbie Ann Boylen, all of whom preceded him in death.

After studying microbiology at the University of California, Berkeley, Kevin followed his father’s interest in Africa (who lectured around the world on HIV/AIDS treatments), and traveled throughout North and East Africa before ultimately settling in Kenya. Prior to marrying Sarah, he had three children through a previous marriage: Tamu (34), Debbie (30) and Vera (24).

Kevin had a passion for computers and installed computer laboratories in numerous schools and a children’s home in Nairobi and also started a digital literacy school.

Constantly on a mission to bake tasty, healthy bread for his family and friends, Kevin especially loved movie nights with his beloved family and was known to pause the DVD to share an interesting historical fact or cultural observation.

In addition to his wife and children, Kevin leaves behind his parent-in-laws, Benjamin and Elizabeth Nyakundi Machaka of Bonyunyu Market, West Mugirango in Nyamira County, Kenya, and step-mother, Elaine Norton Boylen of California.
