Kenneth's obituary
Kenneth Dee “Ken” “Kenny” Syre was born to Raymond and Delores Syre of Everson, WA on Sept. 11, 1944. Together with his siblings David, Stephen, Margaret, and Mary he was raised on the family farm on the Nooksack River. After graduating from Mt. Baker High School, Ken was in the Army and attended both WSU and WWU, earning degrees in Vocational Education/General Agriculture and Sociology/Anthropology.
After a brief time teaching he found his true passion for nursery work, landscaping, irrigation, and pruning. Ken loved spending time outdoors and designing beautiful and flowing spaces. He did this type of work for over 20 years from Oregon, to eastern Washington, to Lynnwood, to Everson.
Later in life he was able to attend herbal schools in Colorado and California, earning certifications and meeting new friends. He developed deep interests in wellness, writing his book Quiet Gardens, and spirituality. His dog Vinny was a fixture during this time and was his constant companion for 17 years.
He enjoyed being on the move, and his home usually contained wheels. After many years of being away, he returned to his childhood stomping grounds of Everson, where he immersed himself in writing, working on the farm pruning, spending time with family and friends, and taking care of his health. Twenty months went by from the first round of hospice in Oct 2021 until he passed away after bravely battling pulmonary fibrosis, heart failure, and kidney failure. Ken was strong and determined, always planning on getting better so that he could get back to writing, pruning, and proper visiting. He will forever live in our hearts.
Ken is survived by his 3 children and their spouses: Brenda and Chad Crowe, Jason and Kristin Syre, and Shawn and Sarah Syre. He considered Mateo Heaton a son as well. Ken had 5 grandchildren: Madison, Cameron, Keaton, Izaak, and Izabel, and 2 stepsons: Greg and David Dick.
A memorial gathering will be held at Syre Park, Sunday July 30th at 1pm. All who loved Ken and his family are welcome to attend.
