Kenneth's obituary

Ken passed away June 11, 2022, in Langley, British Columbia after a life well lived and loved.

He leaves his wife and best friend of 56 years, Lois Lynn Roberts (nee Lyons), son Kirk (Richelle), daughter Kristine (John) and 6 grandchildren – Keegan, Connor & Cameron Roberts and Olivia, Marissa and Matthew Ponte – all of Langley, B.C. He was affectionally known as Gigi by his grandchildren and by most who knew him. Nephews and nieces from far and wide were embraced with irreverent joy and visited often.

Ken was predeceased by his parents, Paul Roberts and Madeline Roberts (nee Lucyk) and his brother Paul Alison Roberts.

Born in St Boniface, Manitoba, Ken grew up in East St Paul, Manitoba. Trained as a draftsman, Ken worked for Architectural and Engineering firms in Winnipeg and Vancouver, prior to joining Tree Island Industries.

Ken and Lynn moved to British Columbia in 1968 where they raised their family and enjoyed all that beautiful BC had to offer.

An ardent outdoorsman, Ken loved flyfishing, despite his allergy to fish, which prevented him from ever tasting his catch! He shared this love of nature with his grandchildren, who embrace it as well. A strong swimmer, his love of scuba diving inspired some of the family to become certified; a shared diving experience with them was enjoyed in the Dominican Republic and meant so much to him. World travels brought him immense joy – particularly stays in Italy where memories were made and his 50th wedding anniversary celebrated with the family.

Ken was known to build any number of things to last 100 years, sought perfection and was keen to provide advice to everyone. He assisted his kids and grandchildren with a wide variety of projects, both big and small. He had an incredible work ethic and was not afraid of hard work; traits and skills he taught to family and those who had the opportunity to work with him. His love of gardening was such that he was known to scold a neighbor if they did not water the boulevard trees. Ken was always the “go to” guy in the neighborhood for anyone who needed help. He loved putzing around if there was not a project on hand, making dill pickles, sauerkraut and eating Lemon Meringue pie.

His family embraced him during every moment of his last days, with love, many stories and tears. Though he could no longer speak, convinced that he could hear, words were spoken, and music played.

Ken requested no formal service. Instead, he wanted his ashes spread at one of his favorite fishing lakes. The family will gather privately to celebrate his life over a weekend, doing just what he wanted in the great BC outdoors.

The family requests no flowers. Please consider giving to the charity of your choice and join us at the Celebration of Life on Sunday September 25th. Please contact Ken’s immediate family for further information.
