Keith's obituary

The life and tales of Keith Michael Roberts, Sr. were epic, but were brought to a peaceful end on Saturday, November 2, 2019 in San Diego, CA. The struggles that this world doles out so graciously have finally ceased, and the light at the end of the well-ridden trails of life has appeared – at long last.

The trail head of Keith’s life begins on February 15, 1949 in Minneapolis, MN. Throughout his youth, Keith was well-known for his creativity, artistic ability, and equestrian talents. As a man living in southern California, he made a living by working within the equestrian community, as a bartender, and as a floral artist. However, he was always called back to the barn, fields, and an honest day of sweat. The equestrian life was the life for him.

Keith was admired within the equestrian communities throughout southern California. At the ripe old age of 10, he participated in his first gymkhana event at Bradley Stables in Bonita, CA. From there he went on to compete in nationally and internationally recognized horse shows across the country. He competed in a variety of events, including Arabian, Morgan, gaited horse and driving shows. He often worked as a ranch hand, equestrian trainer, and drove his beloved draft horse (Anthony) throughout the enchanting streets of San Diego for the Cinderella Carriage Company. A few years ago his health finally forced Keith to retire from the equestrian circuit, but he could be spotted as a spectator at local events through to the end.

His love for animals did not start and end with horses. Rather Keith enjoyed involving himself in countless animal rescue organization. His favorite local, charitable organization dealt with saving neglected and abused Dalmatians, and rehoming them. Often times these poor creatures would not have to look far for a new home. They would simply sniff Keith out and POOF, find themselves a new cozy couch to call their own at his place of residence. Keith also enjoyed grooming dogs, and had a shop of his own at one point, putting his creative talent to work for him.

As his early start would suggest, Keith grew into a very creative individual. He excelled in the arts of floristry, often working as a floral artist, and arranged several of his nieces’ wedding center pieces and bouquets. His works of living art were simply exquisite, and were some of the behind the scenes building blocks of his family’s best memories.

Keith is survived by his sons (Keith Roberts, Jr. and Troy Roberts), his grandchildren (Sarah Roberts, Derek Roberts, and Gavin Roberts), his sisters (Judy Roberts Earls and Sally Roberts Osborne), a brother (James Roberts), and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by those friends who stood by him: Barbara Shinn Jacobsen, Lesley Beals, Sher Kirk, LauraLee Couto-Bushey, Barbara Beamer, Linda and Dave Sommer, Darcey Albino-attig, and David Harman. His memory surely lasts also in the minds of the many others who crossed his path during his vagabond life. The last survivor of Keith Michael Roberts, Sr. is one very beloved (and yes, deaf) Ibizian Hound dog named Whee, who supported him through the most difficult times of his life.

He was predeceased by mother Esther Roberts, father Eugene Roberts, and brother David Roberts.

Keith is finally at rest, all struggles gone. He was most certainly greeted with great joy by his many dogs and horses who passed on to green pastures before him.
