It’s difficult to process the idea that Kayla is gone. We met in 2012 while working on a political campaign in California and stayed in touch intermittently after she moved back to Missouri. I so admire all the work she did with the St Louis animal shelter helping vulnerable creatures - she was a beautiful soul.  Truly one of a kind.  The world is a poorer place without Kayla in it.

I am going to dig through my photos to see if I can find pictures of my dogs wearing the hand-made bow ties she made for them as part of the Thelma project. If/when I find the photos I will share them here.

When we were young we went stargazing often. Both on purpose and just when we didn’t have anything to do. Sitting on the deck laying on our backs and dreaming of the future.  For Christmas she named a star after me. Kayla was so thoughtful and kind. She would listen better than most people. She could really hear you, and make you feel seen. Her life was so inspiring for all of us to make sure you look out for others. Be kind and listen to those around you. I will never forget her.
I missed our lunch date. Last time we spoke 😔 You will be forever loved Kayla 🥺 My deep condolences 💐 💔💔💔
I met Kayla about a decade ago when she invited me to present media outreach tips to a collection of local advocacy and nonprofit groups. From there, I followed her activism, her adventures, her dog love, and her active empathy. Kayla dropped off my very first cloth mask at the start of the pandemic, and I know she improved so many lives during that dark period by stirring up so much community help very quickly. I feel lucky to have witnessed just a small window of this whirlwind's amazing life journey.
