Kay's obituary

Kay Shida Tsukuno November 5, 1920 – November 6, 2024        Kay Shida Tsukuno passed away peacefully on November 6, 2024, in Elmhurst, Illinois, at the age of 104. Born on November 5, 1920, in Pasadena, California, Kay lived a remarkable life marked by compassion, dedication, and service to others. Kay began her career as a nurse’s aide before joining the U.S. Cadet Nurse Corps during World War II. She later graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Nursing, embarking on a career that reflected her deep care for others. After starting a family, Kay devoted herself to raising her three children with love and commitment. Kay was preceded in death by her husband Harold Tsukuno, her brother Koji Shida, and her grandson Craig Tsukuno. She is lovingly remembered by her children Gary Tsukuno, Paul Tsukuno, and Laurie Tsukuno; her niece Joanne Tokeshi; her nephew Kevin Shida; her niece Pam Gargett; her grandson David Tsukuno; her great-grandsons Liam, Oliver, and Anders Tsukuno; and many other cherished relatives and friends, especially .including Linda Horton and Dora Wescott. Kay had a passion for travel, competitive bridge games, and reading. She also dedicated much of her time to volunteering with organizations such as the Greater Chicago Food Depository and Meals on Wheels. Her generosity extended to knitting winter hats for inner-city children, embodying her lifelong commitment to helping others. Kay’s final resting place is at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Illinois. In honor of her legacy, the family requests that donations be made to the University of Minnesota School of Nursing. Kay’s memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. May she rest in peace.
