Katie's obituary
Kay Ann “Katie” Volk went home to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on February 5th, 2025. She was preceded in death by her father, Joe Womack, and her brother, Jerry Womack, her aunt Annie Warren. Katie is lovingly remembered by her mother, Kay Womack; her son, Ryan Hopper; her husband, Joe Volk; her brother, Joe Womack; cousins Wayne Warren, Shannon Steward, Nikki Forbus, uncles Jerry Warren & Wesley Warren, niece Faye Womack and nephew Warren Womack and all who had the blessing of knowing her.
Born on March 9, 1962, in 29 Palms, California, Katie was never one to take no for an answer. She spent her early years in San Clemente before her family moved to Dallas, Texas, in 1973. Her journey took her to Seattle and across the country before returning to Dallas, where she spent 20 years as a professional driver with FedEx, forming lasting friendships and collecting great stories along the way. She later thrived in administration and real estate.
Still, Katie’s greatest joy was her son, Justin Ryan Hopper, born on March 11, 1990, from her marriage to the late Wayne Hopper.
Beyond her career and family, Katie found joy in humor, painting, and was a better poker player than anyone. She also held a deep love for her country, cherishing the freedoms and values she held dear. She was known for her love of people, unwavering principles, humor, and her “I won’t eat anything had had eyeballs” 40 year vegetarianism—values admired by her family, friends, and colleagues.
Katie fought a courageous battle with Scleroderma over the past several years, facing each day with faith, resilience, and a radiant spirit. She embraced both traditional and holistic treatments, celebrated every day with joy, and inspired those around her with her unwavering positivity. She was bold, funny, and unapologetically herself—a strong, determined woman who lived life on her own terms. To those who knew her, she was not only a beloved wife, mother, and daughter but also a loyal friend and an unwavering source of support. Her loving and gracious spirit will continue to shine in the hearts of all who knew her.
In honor of Katie’s memory, the family requests that you are not burdened by sadness but to carry on her memory with happiness and gratitude and spread joy the way Katie always did.
Donations can be also made to the Scleroderma Research Foundation to support ongoing research and bring hope to others affected by this disease.
