EARLIER MEMORIES OF EATING OUT WITH MY MOM

As noted in an earlier post, my mother loved it when I took her out to eat.  However, I have some very fond memories of my mother taking me out to eat in my early years (circa 1972-73) when I was only about 5 or 6 years old.  She would have been 23 and 24 years old at the time.

Just north of Charlotte where Highway 16 crosses the Catawba River, sat Laura's Rozzelle House – an unassuming small plantation house that was famous for its family-style country food.

The house was built in 1849 by Dick and Rozzelle when they ran a ferry service across the Catawba River. It was the only house in Mecklenburg County that was witness to the only Civil War skirmish in the area (the house even carried bullet hole marks from the battle). For a hundred years it served as either an inn or some type of restaurant. The building had a great feel to it--with walls and ceiling made of wide pine boards and a simple dining room of long tables and wood chairs and a big fireplace.

In the 1960's the house became "Laura's" and was famous for the cast-iron skillet fried chicken, sugar-cured country ham, candied yams, and hot "cat head biscuits" (named for their whopping girth). The biscuits were complemented by the native home-made crab-apple jelly. Everything was served family style and was all you-can-eat.

I have early memories of my mother taking me out here to eat on occasion as a treat.  Again, I was only about 5 or 6 at the time.  But I loved the candied yams, fried chicken, and country ham.

This place, of course, had more well-known visitors than just me and my mother.  A few more well-known visitors, including Orson Wells, were known to have frequented this establishment.

MY LAST DAYS WITH MOM:

My Mother, Kathy, was placed on hospice palliative care in early April.  I flew down from Wisconsin to see her.  I was able to spend time with her on Saturday & Sunday (April 1 & 2) following her visit to hospital.  At that time, she appeared to be in good spirits and was eating on her own.  She recognized me and smiled.  I put lotion on her feet which is something I used to do as a kid for her.  I was happy to do this one last thing for her.  I was also glad to have been able to spend some quality time with my mom while she was awake in her final days at the Hickory Village Memory Care facility.

I came back a week later to spend additional time with my mom again in her final days after hospice notified me of her deteriorating condition.  I was able to be there for my mother for the entire last week of her life (April 12, 13, 14 & 15) holding her hand, talking to her, and playing her favorite music for her.  I had put together a list of her favorite songs for her to listen to from my iPhone.  We listened together as I held her hand each day.

My mother died on Saturday evening, April 15, 2023, at 5:03pm EST with me at her side.  All of us (me, my wife, and the nursing staff) then waited for the hospice nurse to arrive and provide an official time of death for my mother’s passing which was logged on paper officially at 7:52pm EST.  The funeral home arrived later at about 9:00pm to take my mother’s body to the funeral home.

Initially, it seemed like we all waited together forever, but those last 4 hours turned into a wonderful moment in time for me because it allowed me time to converse with the nursing staff that had taken such good care of my mother in the last few years of her life at the facility.  I have such deep appreciation for the four (4) nurses who were on staff that night with me (Amber, Tara, Brisa, & Sabrina).  They comforted me following my mother’s passing.  I enjoyed sharing those last 4 hours with them while we waited together for both the hospice nurse and the funeral home to arrive.  It was comforting for me to hear all the memories they had of my mother.  They told me that my mother used to take a picture she had of me in uniform that was on her nightstand and walk around the facility telling others how proud she was of me.  They also told me that she had a favorite outfit she liked to wear which was a 2-piece plum velour set that I had purchased for her a few years earlier.  When the nurses would help her change each day, they would ask her what she wanted to wear, and she would always go for the outfit I had purchased for her.  It was wonderful for me to hear these stories.  As a tribute to my mom, the nurses performed one last gesture of kindness that night for my mother by cleaning and preparing her body to be transported to the funeral home.  They were wonderful that night.  And they made it a wonderful night for everyone there.

Kathy was a wonderful mother to me.  She made me the man I am today.  She was always there for me, and I will never forget the sacrifices she made for me.  I miss her so very much.

MY MOM’S FAVORITE RESTAURANTS:

My Mother, Kathy, loved to eat out.  She had a handful of favorite restaurants that she always asked me to take her to when I would come in to see her.

Her Number 1 favorite restaurant was JONES FISH CAMP in Maiden, NC.  She always ordered fried flounder, hushpuppies, and sweet iced tea.  This was a lifelong favorite restaurant for her from the time I was a baby.  It was a favorite of Fred Kirby as well who was a local cowboy western celebrity back in the 70s with his Kid’s TV show on WBTV in Charlotte which was well known when I was growing up.

My mom’s Number 2 favorite restaurant was CARRABBAS ITALLIAN GRILL in Hickory, NC.  We went there often, and my mother would order their Minestrone Soup with a salad and sweet iced tea.  But perhaps her most favorite item was their bread.  She loved the herb and olive oil dip that they brought out with the bread and would often order a second helping.

Mom’s Number 3 favorite restaurant was BOSS HOG BBQ in Sherrills Ford, NC.  We went there quite a bit as well when I flew down to visit her.  My mother always ordered the BBQ pulled pork sandwich along with fried okra and sweet iced tea.

Mom’s Number 4 place to eat was KRISPY KREME DOUGNUTS in Hickory, NC.  Although, she really did not go there for a meal, she simply liked to reward herself occasionally with a deep-fried glazed doughnut and a sweet-iced tea.  She loved her Krispy Kreme Doughnuts.  As my mother’s memory declined and she was admitted into the Hickory Village Memory Care Facility, I would often bring her a Krispy Kreme doughnut to enjoy as diversion from her normal diet in the facility.  She would devour the doughnut with a Kung Fu grip.  She would laugh as I tried to clean the frosting off her hands, but she would not release the doughnut until she finished it.  It was truly one of the last pleasures she enjoyed in life.  I, of course, had to join her in eating a glazed doughnut myself.  And I would always bring a box of doughnuts for the nursing staff as well.

One common theme noted in the memories I have of my mother above is her love of sweet tea.  She had a favorite brand that she would make at home (Red Rose) and was unable to find that brand sometimes at her local grocery store.  She would often ask me to bring a box down for her when I would visit her in her later years.  I miss her so much.

MOM’S FAVORITE HOLIDAY MOVIES OF ALL-TIME:

3.	The Ten Commandments (1956) starring Charlton Heston and Yul Brynner
4.	Scrooge (1970) starring Albert Finney
5.	Jesus Of Nazareth (1977) Starring Robert Powell
6.	A Christmas Story (1983) starring Peter Billingsley
7.	Home Alone (1990) starring Macaulay Culkin
8.	Fallen Angel (2003) Hallmark Movie starring Gary Sinise
9.	The Nine Lives of Christmas (2014) Hallmark Movie starring Brandon Routh

My mother had her favorite scenes in all the movies listed above.  She loved the Ten Commandments and the banter between Charlton Heston and Yul Brynner.  She also loved Jesus of Nazareth.  She felt that Franco Zeffirelli’s version of Jesus of Nazareth was the most accurate.  She loved Robert Powell in the role.

There have been a lot of movie versions and actors who have portrayed Scrooge in Charles Dicken’s “A Christmas Carol”, but my mom’s favorite version is the 1970 Version with Albert Finney.  She loved the music in the movie as well as Albert Finney’s portrayal of Scrooge.  She would always laugh when Scrooge was dancing with the crowd singing “Thank You Very Much” not knowing that the crowd was thanking Scrooge, himself, for dying.

The Hallmark Movie, Fallen Angel, became a new favorite of hers in her later years as well as The Nine Lives of Christmas.
