The best way that I know to honor you is to write it down and show what a wonderful mother you were to me. This is a photo of my mother, Kathy Baldwin (Maiden Name: Tyson), in 1955 at the age of 6, with her first-grade classmates at Benton Heights Elementary School (aka Benton Heights High School) located at 1200 Concord Ave, Monroe, NC 28110.  My mother’s home at that time was literally only about a quarter of a mile behind the school at . . . 1221 Cranberry Street, Monroe, NC 28110.

My mother’s first year in school in 1955 was significant in many ways.  Polio vaccine was first introduced to the public in 1955.  My mother, Kathy, was one of the first students to receive the polio vaccine during her first year at Benton Heights.  Many other significant events occurred in 1955 when my mother was in first grade.  Ray Kroc opened his first franchised McDonald's fast-food restaurant in 1955 in Des Plaines, Illinois.  Coca-Cola introduced its product to the public for the first time in a “canned format” in 1955.  Prior to 1955, Coca-Cola had only been sold in bottles.  Emblazoned with the iconic logo in red, the can was made of “tin” and resembled a can of soup. It wasn’t until twelve years later in 1967 that Coca-Cola switched its canned product from “tin” to “aluminum”.  My mother, Kathy, would have seen Coke introduced in an aluminum can format for the first time just one year after she graduated from Sun Valley High School, Monroe, NC in 1966.

The year 1955 was significant in many other ways.  Winston Churchill retired from office and from public life in 1955.  Albert Einstein, the famous German-born physicist died in 1955.  Einstein, in his research, defined “time” as a 4th dimension in addition to the 3 physical dimensions of length, width, and height.  He also postulated that time travel was indeed possible.  His equation, E = mc2, served as the cornerstone for his theory of special relativity stating that mass and energy are the same physical entity and can be changed into each other.  In the equation, the increased relativistic mass (m) of a body times the speed of light squared (c2) is equal to the kinetic energy (E) of that body.

THE LAW OF CONSERVATION OF ENERGY states that energy can neither be created nor destroyed – only converted from one form of energy to another.  This is a fundamental tenet of physics.  Strictly from a scientific perspective, my mother’s energy and being has transitioned from a physical state (mass) to a kinetic state (energy).  She can now travel anywhere in the universe and to any time unconstrained by the mortal bonds of the physical universe.  Her physical mortal state still exists within the space-time continuum between the years 1948 and 2023, but her kinetic state is now free to travel anywhere at any time.

Both Steve Jobs and Bill Gates were also born in 1955, the same year that Albert Einstein passed away and the same year that my mother, Kathy, was in first grade.  Steve Jobs developed and introduced the Apple computer in 1976 as well as the Apple iPhone in 2007.  Bill Gates developed and introduced the Microsoft operating platform, known as Windows, in 1985.  Both Steve Jobs and Bill Gates significantly changed the world with their inventions. My mother bought me my first Apple 2E computer in 1983 when I was only 15 years old during my sophomore year in high school.

Yes, many significant historical events occurred in 1955 when my mother, Kathy, was in first grade.  And she physically lived another 67 years after that time up to the age of 74.  My mother witnessed a lot of significant events during her physical lifetime.  She witnessed the assassination of the 35th President of the United States, John F. Kennedy, in 1963, when she was only 14 years old during her freshman year in high school.  Seventeen years later at age the age of 32, she witnessed the swearing in of the 40th President of the United States, Ronald Reagan, in 1981.  Twenty years after that at the age of 53, she witnessed the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, for which I witnessed up-close myself during my flight into LaGuardia on a business trip that same morning unable to contact her to tell her I was safe.  My mother, Kathy, really did indeed live a full exciting life during a significant time in history.  She got to experience it all starting back in 1955 when she was only 6 years old.

Last, and certainly not least – November 15, 1955, became a red-letter date in the history of science when Dr. Emmett L. Brown (aka “Doc” Brown) while standing on his toilet hanging a clock slipped and bumped his head resulting in him envisioning the idea for the “flux capacitor” which is what makes time travel possible.  Doc Brown later noted that the year 1955 (my mother’s first year in elementary school) might inherently contain some sort of cosmic significance . . . almost as if it were the junction point for the entire space-time continuum itself.  This certainly may be the case with all the significant historical events that occurred during my mother’s tenure as a first grader at Benton Heights Elementary School in Monroe, NC. Kennedy, in 1963, when she was only 14 years old during her freshman year in high school. Seventeen years later at age the age of 32, she witnessed the swearing in of the 40th President of the United States, Ronald Reagan, in 1981. Twenty years after that at the age of 53, she witnessed the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, for which I witnessed up-close myself during my flight into LaGuardia on a business trip that same morning unable to contact her to tell her I was safe. My mother, Kathy, really did indeed live a full exciting life during a significant time in history. She got to experience it all starting back in 1955 when she was only 6 years old.

Last, and certainly not least – November 15, 1955, became a red-letter date in the history of science when Dr. Emmett L. Brown (aka “Doc” Brown) while standing on his toilet hanging a clock slipped and bumped his head resulting in him envisioning the idea for the “flux capacitor” which is what makes time travel possible. Doc Brown later noted that the year 1955 (my mother’s first year in elementary school) might inherently contain some sort of cosmic significance . . . almost as if it were the junction point for the entire space-time continuum itself. This certainly may be the case with all the significant historical events that occurred during my mother’s tenure as a first grader at Benton Heights Elementary School in Monroe, NC. On the other hand, it could all just be an amazing coincidence. I love you and miss you, mom. This is the last photograph taken of my mother at the Hickory Village Memory Care Facility in September of 2019 prior to the implementation of the COVID19 lockdowns which went into effect about six months later.  On March 30, 2020, the Governor of North Carolina enacted a total shutdown of all nursing home facilities, and a “stay-at-home” mandate was ordered for the public.  This prevented families, including me, from visiting with their loved ones for over 12 months due to the state government-ordered lockdown.  Fortunately, I was able to get updates by phone on my mother’s health condition each month from the nurses taking care of her.  Later during the lockdown period, I was informed that my mother had contracted COVID, but thankfully she was strong enough to pull through and survive.  It wasn’t until early September of 2020 that North Carolina began to allow outdoor visits to nursing homes followed by indoor visits in late September of 2020.  However, visits specifically to Hickory Village by the public remained restricted and limited until late May of 2021.  It wasn’t until two months later (August 2021) that I was able to visit my mother again following the full lifting of COVID lockdown restrictions.  By this time, I noticed that my mother’s memory and cognitive ability had declined significantly.  But she was still able to recognize me at this point and I could still understand some of the things she was saying.  Going forward, I was able to visit her periodically throughout the remainder of 2021 as well as throughout the whole year of 2022.  But her memory and speech patterns continued to diminish between each visit.  By January of 2022, I noticed that she had lost the full ability to speak coherently but she was still able to walk and eat.  The one constant that remained was her enjoyment of the Krispy Kreme doughnuts that I would bring her each time I visited.  She would laugh and smile every time I brought her some.  I think the nurses enjoyed my visits just as much as my mother did because I also treated them to a box of Krispy Kreme doughnuts every time that I came to see my mother.  I miss her every day.

My mother supported me in all my endeavors and was extremely proud of me and my accomplishments. She was always there for me and attended all my graduations. She attended my graduation from Princeton Senior High School (Princeton, WV) in 1986, my graduation from Concord College (Athens, WV) where I earned my Bachelor’s Degree in 1994, and my graduation from Averett University (Danville, VA) in 2006 where I earned my first graduate master’s degree (Master of Business Administration - MBA).

My mother joined me two years later in late spring of 2008 in Philadelphia, PA when I earned my second graduate master’s degree (Master of Science in Drug Development & Product Management - MPhM), from the Erivan K. Haub School of Business at Saint Joseph’s University.  Shown above is a photo of me (Richard) with my mother (Kathy) in Philadelphia prior to the graduation ceremony.

Following the graduation ceremony that day, my mother joined me and my fellow graduate cohorts and their families for lunch at Maggiano’s where she got to meet a lot of my fellow friends in the industry.  She really enjoyed eating out with me and meeting my friends.

Out of all the achievements and accomplishments I have had in my life, my number one highest honor has simply been being her son. Thanks for always being there for me, mom! I love you and miss you.
