I so admired Kathleen’s spirit, thoughtfulness, warm smile, genuine interest in others and musical dedication,  Such a jewel!  She was so welcoming to me many years ago as a new piano teacher in the Twin Cities.  We enjoyed performing in the MMTF Performance-Listening sessions over the years. 

I've been thinking of Mrs. Van Doeren often since seeing her obituary in the paper. I loved being her neighbor and her student. Grateful for all the ways she encouraged and pushed me when necessary. I'm sad to think I won't unexpectedly run into her walking down Limerick anymore. I was always delighted to catch up with her and I always felt like she was happier to see me than I deserved (much to her and my mother's chagrin, I was not a very dedicated piano student!). Recently I thought of giving away some old piano books and changed my mind. They are filled with notes in Mrs. Van Doeren's handwriting. Whenever I play, I think of her. Much love to your family from all the Powells. Kathleen was a very special woman and will be greatly missed.

She was everything I needed, when I needed it. She believed in me and liked me. I miss her. 

We're so sorry to hear of Kathy's passing.  Although we haven't seen you in such a long time, we have many lovely memories of your whole family.  In particular, we remember an early morning coming back from the park with a very young (and rabunctious) boy, and Kathy inviting us in for coffee.  She was so kind and encouraging to us a fairly new parents.  We felt very lucky to be included in a neighborhood full of good friends on our visits to Edina.  (Steve and Nancy Young Daniels - Dave's sister)
