Kathleen's obituary

It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Kathleen Gemmell, a woman of remarkable wit, friendliness, and creativity, on December 14, 2025. Born on January 11, 1956, Kathleen was a beacon of kindness and support to others.

She is lovingly remembered by her beloved son, Jonathan Gemmell, daughter-in-law, Gillian McCusker and her brother Michael Hiener and family.  Her memory will continue to live on in their hearts, her cherished friends and through the stories she crafted.

The Society Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) held a special place in Kathleen’s heart, reflecting her compassionate nature and generous spirit.  Please consider making a donation to the SPCA or your local animal shelter as a way to honor her memory. Following her wishes there will be no funeral service at this time.  Her family may arrange a Mass in her honor at the Baltimore Basilica in the future.

Kathleen was an accomplished writer. Her short stories found their home in anthology books, newspapers, and digital spaces. Her narratives were testament to her spirit, intellect, her mental health struggles and often her passion for animals.  As a lifelong animal lover,  Kathleen was an talented equestrian in her youth. Then dog trainer, pet lover and animal rights advocate.  Classic rock was her music of choice, especially the timeless melodies of Billy Joel, which she often played.

Kathleen was a devout Catholic, her faith being a guiding force in her life. It grounded her and helped her navigate the trials of life with Grace.

In her struggles, she was a beacon of support to others, whether it was talking with friends or aiding fellow writers in expressing themselves. Kathleen’s legacy is one of enduring kindness and generosity. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege to know her.
