Kathy's obituary

Kathleen Mavourneen "Aunt Kathy" Bailey passed away on Saturday, January 4, 2025, in Lansing, Michigan, at the age of 79. Born on August 27, 1945, in Ann Arbor, Michigan, to Earl and Betty (Canterbury) Beckel, she was the youngest of her siblings by a decade and often served as a bridge between generations in our family. With an impish smile and a quick laugh, she shared the quirky sense of humor that was a hallmark of our family.

Aunt Kathy grew up in Northville, Michigan, and after graduating from Northville High School, she attended Michigan State University. There, she earned a Bachelor's Degree in Education with an emphasis on Special Education, setting the foundation for her lifelong passion for teaching.

She eventually made her home in New Jersey and devoted 35 years to teaching high school students at North 13th Street Vocational School in Essex County (Newark). Teaching brought her immense joy, and she formed lasting connections with her students. Nothing delighted her more than hearing a former student excitedly call out her name when they recognized her in public.

Outside the classroom, Aunt Kathy found happiness in reading, going to concerts, and traveling—especially cruising with her dear friend Stuart Weiss. Their trip to Alaska remained one of her most cherished adventures. At home, she took great pleasure in watching birds and wildlife visit the pond outside her window. Her church family at Unity Church of Montclair, New Jersey, was also deeply meaningful to her; even after relocating back to Michigan, she continued attending their online services. Special gratitude goes to Chrysoula and Kim for their steadfast friendship and support.

Above all else, Aunt Kathy had an extraordinary love for dogs—her own as well as those belonging to others. She never passed by a dog without stopping to give it attention and often remembered dogs' names more readily than those of their owners. Her deep affection for animals was one of her most endearing qualities.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn Bailey; her brother Bob Beckel; and her sisters Ann Kron and Janie Donnelly. She is survived by her nephews Bob Beckel and David Kron; nieces Debbie Donnelly, Cindy Donnelly, and Lisa Kron; their families; as well as her beloved dog, Shauna.

Aunt Kathy brightened the lives of those around her with kindness and laughter. Though she will be deeply missed, the love she shared will live on forever in the hearts of those who knew her.
