Karin's obituary
Known as Katianna (“Kat”), she was a beautiful, joyful and spirited woman whose life was defined by water, growing up with summer trips with her family to Sea Island, Ga., marrying on the beach in Destin, Fla., working from her balcony with views of the marina below, and travelling for business to Cannes or visiting with friends in Miami.
Kat’s love of outdoor living made her a lifelong devotee of health and fitness. On any given day, she could be seen running on the beach or walking her Maltese along the marina’s promenade. A free spirit who lived life to the fullest, a favorite day would be a drive north along the Pacific Coast Highway to dine with friends at Geoffrey’s in Malibu or a contemplative retreat to Wayfarers Chapel, in a peaceful setting above the cliffs of Rancho Palos Verdes. Music, dancing and nighttime conversations stretching into the morning were her passions.
The fluidity of water also defined her daily work, as Kat, always an entrepreneur, was a pioneer in the introduction of sunless tanning products (she founded a company to sell them) and campaigned (successfully) to restrict the use of cancer-causing tanning beds.
Kat had an abiding interest in her illustrious family heritage, including membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution, which she qualified for from both her Hasbrouck and Nightingale lines.
A graduate of Boston College, Kat was deeply spiritual, often attending services in her area and supporting several charities. She lived her Christian values, a friend to call in time of need, a mother figure to young adults seeking advice, and an advocate for the voiceless when fighting a wrong.
Kat is survived by her parents, Robert and Astrid Hasbrouck of New Providence, N.J.; sister Melinda Hasbrouck Donsky with her husband, Doug Donsky, their children, Tyler and Kate, all of Chatham, N.J.; and her former husband/continuing close friend, Bruce Watkins of Arroyo Grande, California. She was a cherished cousin, colleague and friend to countless more.
In memory of Kat’s life, the family held a private service at sea in Marina Del Rey on her birthday, February 22, 2022, a numerical date (2/22) that always held deep significance to Kat throughout her life and one when she felt important events occurred.
