Kalie's obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Kalie Mackey, a brave and creative soul, who left us the morning of April 3, 2026 (GMT +9). She had the loving support of her parents by her side in her final moments.

Born on February 25, 1993, Kalie’s life was filled with vibrance, courage, and affection. Her witty and outspoken personality left a lasting impression on everyone she met.

Kalie was predeceased by her sister, Haley Mackey. She is survived by her sisters, Lacey Morgan (Joshua Morgan) and Faye Mackey (Brian Flood); her brothers, Anton and Bryson Mackey; and her parents, Brian and Denise Mackey. The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude for the outpouring of love and support during this incredibly difficult time.

Kalie graduated from Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 2015. Shortly after, she moved to Tokyo, Japan, to begin her next adventure with the JET Program—a journey that revealed her passion for teaching and learning, as well as her ability to adapt and thrive in diverse environments. Her time in Japan shaped her profoundly; it truly was her calling.

In January 2017, Kalie was diagnosed with brain cancer. She faced this challenge with remarkable bravery and grace. True to her nature, she remained outspoken yet wise, teaching those around her the value of vulnerability and courage. She underwent her first craniotomy a month after her diagnosis and remained strong through remission until November 2024. After a second surgery and countless chemotherapy and radiation treatments, Kalie was faced with this difficult reality once more.

Kalie had many passions and talents. She adored her two cats, Yota and Hira, and cared for her plants with remarkable dedication—nurturing them in ways only her special touch could do. From early childhood, she felt a deep connection to nature, whether handing her mother baby snakes or drawing the willow tree that grew just down the driveway. As she entered adulthood, Kalie devoted much of her time to traveling abroad, seeking out renowned tattoo artists, and embracing tattoo artistry as a form of personal expression.

In Kalie’s memory, may we carry in our hearts her unfailing bravery, endless creativity, and extraordinary journey. She will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. As the saying goes, to know her was truly to love her.
