May she find rest and eternal peace in our saviors arms. Thinking and praying for all of you! Love the Cohen family
I am so heartbroken to have heard this news. Anyone who saw Kalie knew how stunningly beautiful she was, but anyone who knew her knew just how beautiful of a soul she had. We had math and Chemistry our sophomore year at DV and shared a friendly rivalry to try and outdo each other academically (she won...always). Everyday I would tell her a new bear-themed joke I came up with (what kind of bear needs sunglasses? A solar bear! What kind of bear is in your mouth? A molar bear! Why did the girl cry? I stole her bear! The point was to make really bad jokes. Mission accomplished!) I had such a crush on her but never felt it was appropriate to mention it, and I valued our friendship. We lost touch after high school but I will keep her memory in my heart and smile whenever I think of a new bear joke.

I had the distinct honor and privilege of teaching Kalie for two classes at DV, including Honors English 10 and Effective Writing.  She was part of a memorable core group from the Class of 2011, of which my brother Michael was a part.  I can say, without reservation, that Kalie had many great friends at DV who cared about her.  She was a vibrant soul with a beautiful spirit, a young woman who loved literature and soccer (she was a varsity girls' soccer player during her years at DVHS and particularly adored Harry Potter). On the last day of school of her junior year, I distinctly remember sharing our World Cup brackets together in 2010, watching her get so excited over "the beautiful game."

This past summer, Kalie randomly sent me a package from Tokyo with some of her art, which includes pages from her favorite books, the sheets cut with various, beautiful shapes with an Exacto knife (you can see her lovely work on Instagram, using the handle @secondhandpages_).

I already hung one of her pages proudly in my classroom, a former student remembering her old English teacher (a sentiment that truly touched my heart), but I hang it with even greater pride now, in memoriam of the wonderful young woman Kalie was.
