Kaejoo's obituary

Kaejoo Ryu had her last breath on May 1, 2024, in Laguna Woods, California.

Born on October 17, 1944, Kaejoo lived a fulfilling life, placing compassion and generosity at the forefront of her everyday life. She leaves behind a remarkable legacy that reflects her beliefs in keeping promises, serving others, and prioritizing family.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Jai-poong Ryu, and her sons, Marcus and Julian, her sisters, Nanjoo and Aija, and her brother, Young Il. She will be missed by her grandchildren; Asha, Xavier, and Cora, who were fortunate to experience her grandma’s love-filled empathy and attentive curiosity. She was predeceased by her parents, Byung Kyu and Hyangja (Park) Chun, and her beloved sister, Sija.

Kaejoo was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, and friend. Kaejoo received her bachelor’s degree from Ewha Women’s University in Seoul and emigrated to the United States in 1968 where she started her first job at the World Bank in Washington, D.C., doing secretarial work in the European Bureau. After marrying Jai-poong in 1971, Kaejoo lived in Los Angeles and Chicago before settling in Baltimore where she would spend the next 43 years.

As her children grew, Kaejoo launched a new career in education. After receiving her master’s degree from Loyola University Maryland at the age of fifty-two, Kaejoo embarked upon a career as a school guidance counselor with a focus on supporting immigrant students and families who were acclimating to the United States.

Kaejoo enjoyed the simple pleasures in life. She savored the flavors of japchae, chigae, and lasagna; she would often be found in the kitchen cooking these dishes for her loved ones. Her homemade cheesecake remains legendary. She had a notable love for entertainment - heartily laughing at silly comedy movies, crying through old K-dramas, or losing herself in the world of musicals.

She found comfort in reading the local Korean language newspaper, watching the national and local evening news, and staying tightly connected to family and friends, closely tracking all the achievements in her community. Her favorite ways to exercise were swimming and walking, showing her appreciation for the tranquility found in nature.

Despite being diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2010, Kaejoo’s unwavering spirit and joyous nature shone brightly, touching the hearts of everyone she encountered. Fortunately, through the long sojourn into her dementia, constant and meticulous care was provided by Sunny Kim of Ellicott City and Grace Shong of Los Angeles.

Kaejoo’s infectious laughter and endless curiosity were a testament to her strength and resilience. Her selflessness and the deep bonds she forged with her family and friends are a core part of her lasting legacy. Her memory will continue to inspire and guide all who were fortunate enough to know her.

Kaejoo's love and light will forever shine in our hearts!
