I am so grateful for my friendship with Jytte the past few years which started fitfully at a gallery reception. She decided that evening we would be friends -and on it went. I had known about Galerie Allen in Vancouver as part of our recent art history (I'm a bit younger) but to hear the stories from the source... the characters and the art stories -it has made my art life here bigger. I was so encouraged in the studio and she became my delighted audience for any good art news. She also pushed me to get out and celebrate life while the sun is shining. Or... it's raining, we should go to the Sylvia for a glass of wine! Brighten this day. We laughed a lot and noticed handsome men...waiters, nurses. "Of course you should notice -you are a visual artist!" She was forthright, smart, curious and kind. With Jytte and her son, Carsten's blessing, my family has adopted Jazz. Jytte's sweet Jazzy pup had met our pug and is settling in well.

We came to know Jytte soon after she arrived in Vancouver and opened the Galerie Allen in Gastown. She became a great champion of Canadian artists at a time when such support was not that common in the commercial sector. We loved Jytte's indomitable spirit, shared her passion for art and literature, and admired her optimism through some tough times. We are proud to have been her friends, and visits to Vancouver won't ever be quite the same now that we can't look forward to having lunches with her.

I feel very grateful for knowing Jytte from living in the same building for several years. Numerous afternoons and evenings were spent listening to the wonderful stories of her younger years in Europe and elsewhere, her gallery space in Vancouver (way ahead of her time), her encounters with many amazing and talented people of this world, discussing philosophy, art, human nature, love, relationships and all that makes us human.

Each time I'd find her walk Jazz in the neighbourhood, we would catch up some more, and she would often refer me to a part of "The First and Last Freedom." Perhaps I should finish the book now...

I will miss such visits, but I will also treasure them. I was also really excited about her book project, as I kept checking on her progress when we'd meet. I hope this project will materialize.

Rest well, Jytte.
Ever so grateful.

I miss my good friend Jytte so much! We became close in last few years and spend time together visiting exhibitions, having lunch at the Sylvia or her apartment, discussing life and art. I will cherish the stories of her early life, her experiences in the art world and her precious advice. She was elegant, intelligent and compassionate. I hope that her great efforts with the book project are realized. We must keep her memory and legacy alive. Perhaps a grant in her name? Goodbye dear friend you were special!
So fitting, dear bold friend and Great Dane, to ride a comet out of here. I will miss our long friendship and our conversations about everything. Much love to all.
