June's obituary
June passed away at Glenmeadow Retirement Community April 13, 2026 after a brief period of hospice in Assisted Living.
June was a vivacious, social woman who enjoyed a good party, good music, and laughter with friends and family. She was a cancer survivor who managed her rheumatoid arthritis and various heart conditions with tenacity, humor, and frequent celebrations.
June was born and raised in Oakwood, Staten Island. She attended New Dorp High School where she played multiple sports and spent summers at Cedar Grove Beach Club. She earned an Associate’s Degree from Centenary Junior College, married William Catherwood, and had 3 children. She had a cabaret license and occasionally sang in local clubs/bars. She became a fierce advocate for the education of special needs children. She was a founding member of Staten Island Aid for Retarded Children, as well as in the Women’s Auxiliary for Professional Engineers, Garden Club, St. Clare Mother’s Club, Cub Scout leader, and many other organizations. June returned to college and got degrees in Psychology and Special Education, then taught in Staten Island and Bedford Stuyvesant for 15 years. She went to many Broadway productions with her friends from PS32, and traveled, using timeshare she and Bill had in the Poconos.
The family lived in Great Kills until the 1980s, when June, Bill, and Linda retired to Fairfield Glade, TN to golf, travel, and enjoy a new social circle. They took 2-3 cruises a year as well as golf jaunts and snowbird golf in Florida and the Caribbean.
June swam, played tennis, bowled, and golfed into her late 80s. In 2021, she relocated to Longmeadow, Massachusetts to Glenmeadow Independent Living, where she found yet another new group of friends. She enjoyed music bingo, the indoor pool, exercise class and travel presentations, Friday night wine and singalong dinners with Merle and the gang. She shared meals and good times with her lovely group of friends and neighbors, in addition to the wonderful, caring staff at Glenmeadow. She was also able to have many holidays and special events with her family, who visited frequently.
June was predeceased by her husband William of over 50 years, daughter Linda, sister, Edie, as well as a companion of 10 years, Ray Weston. She is survived by 2 children, 7 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren, who will miss their Gigi, as well as by her bffs Pat B. and Virginia L.
June’s ashes will be interred at St. Francis of Assisi Columbarium in Fairfield Glade, TN. https://saintfrancisfairfield…. A family celebration of life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Glenmeadow, which has been a non-profit senior community since 1884. https://glenmeadow.org/giving/
