Judy's obituary

On July 1, 2024, the world lost a brightly shining light. Judy Elaine Unterschultz, née Schellenberger, died unexpectedly at the age of 74 years from a ruptured aneurysm near her heart. Her beloved partner Ian found Judy sitting peacefully in her favourite chair, seemingly poised to take a sip from a refreshing drink after being outside in her garden.

Judy was born in Edmonton, Alberta on February 9, 1950, to parents Ed and Helene Schellenberger. She graduated from the University of Alberta and in 1972, Judy married Lloyd Unterschultz and they had two children, Meghan and Reid.

Judy’s kindness, presence, wisdom, and mighty spirit inspired many. Her career spanned four decades of public service and not-for-profit leadership, including 27 years as Executive Director of the Heritage Agricultural Society (Multicultural Heritage Centre) in Stony Plain. Judy was actively involved in her community as a volunteer and served on multiple Boards of Directors. She was instrumental in founding the Agriculture for Life non-profit and served as a Board Director from its inception to the time of her death. She was one of Canada’s four delegates to the United Nations’ 2012 Commission on the Status of Women in New York and her civic engagement was recognized and honoured with medals for the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee (2002), Alberta Centennial (2005), QEII Diamond Jubilee (2012), and QEII Platinum Jubilee (2022).

Judy delighted in life, always saying she was happiest wherever she happened to be. Judy’s true legacy is her devotion to her family and friends. Judy believed in the goodness of people and generously gave her time and support to those she loved.

Judy is survived by her loving family: Daughter Meghan (Jorey) Klein, son Reid Unterschultz, daughter Catherine Marshall; partner in life Ian McIntyre and his children Christy (Jason) Travis, Jennifer (Jason) Garries, Justin McIntyre, and Kelty (Callum) Sears, and grandchildren Anna Klein, Logan and Bailey Travis, Peyton and Parker Garries, and McKenna, Lochlan, and Maddoch Sears; brothers Stanley (Deborah) Schellenberger and James (Paula) Schellenberger; sisters-in-law Donna (Ronald) Thomas and Connie Unterschultz; and many nephews, nieces, cousins, and extended family. Judy was preceded in death by her parents Edwin Schellenberger, Helene (Hennig Schellenberger) Scheideman, and Raymond Scheideman; brother-in-law Jim Unterschultz; and husband Lloyd Unterschultz.

All are welcome to attend the Celebration of Judy’s Life, which will be held at Stony Plain Heritage Park Pavilion (5100 41 Ave, Stony Plain, Alberta) on Monday, July 15 at 1:00 PM.

Tributes in Judy’s memory may be made to Ag for Life (https://www.agricultureforlif…) to support a cause Judy cared passionately about.
