Charly's obituary

Joyce “Charly” Walton, 80, a fierce and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, passed away in St. Augustine, FL after a short illness, on November 8th, 2021. Born in Denver, CO, Charly was the youngest child of Wally and Peggy Reef and attended East High School. After a few years in New York City, where she was a professional model for the Ford Agency, she came back to Denver and met the love of her life, Donald “Doc” Walton. They married in July 1976 and created a big and loving blended family, a home filled with music, movies, books, fun and a menagerie of pets. Together they ran the textile shop Exhibit B in Cherry Creek and Larimer Square, which specialized in Finnish Marimekko prints. Having studied journalism, Charly’s short story “Write Me Back” was a finalist for a Denver Women’s Press Club award, where her godmother the playwright Mary Chase had also been a member. Charly was a professional bookkeeper for a variety of clients, and worked as the CFO of Ready Temporary Services for over a decade. Always ready for a new adventure, Charly and Doc moved to Arboles, CO in 1999 to run the town’s only general store, and in 2004 retired to Boquete, Panama. In Panama, Doc and Charly joined a vibrant local community of expats and locals and Charly enjoyed golf, her book club, and was an instrumental member of a local spay & neuter program. She was the first woman to get a hole-in-one at the Valle Escondido golf club in Panama. In 2013 Doc and Charly continued their adventure in St. Augustine, FL where they could play golf daily and host family in their comfortable home. A curious and brilliant woman who cared passionately about politics, her family, and animals, Charly was an unforgettable presence, magical, wise and beautiful. She will be dearly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. Charly is survived by her husband Doc Walton; her brother Bill Reef; her brother in law Raymond Hoffman; her daughters Laura, Kira and Dara; stepsons Donnie and Todd; grandchildren Jesse, Keely, and Jackson; and great-grandchildren Easton and Atlas. A Celebration of Life event will be announced at a later date.
