Joyce's obituary
Joyce Salmon, educator and loving wife, mother, Nana, and sister died Thursday April 21st at the age of 78 in Frisco, Texas, surrounded by her family.
A lifelong reader and lover of books, Joyce was born Joyce Anne Hunter to parents Virginia and Hugh on March 12th, 1944, in Louisville, Kentucky. She attended university at Austin Peay State University in Tennessee and graduated with a degree in Elementary Education in 1965. She taught at various grade levels in her 38-year career, but found teaching young children to be the most rewarding.
After college, Joyce moved from Tennessee to Texas, where she met Jack Salmon. Though they would say that they didn’t exactly hit it off at first, they fell deeply in love and were married in 1971. Together they would have three children.
Joyce’s greatest joy in life was her family. In 2003, she retired from teaching to help care for her grandchildren. She loved being goofy and playing with the kids. And she could read a book to a child in a way that kept them in rapt attention from beginning to end. She truly loved being “Nana.”
Joyce was also an avid cook, and even started her own catering company in 1995. Food was her love language, and anyone who ate her cooking could feel the love and attention to detail that she put into every dish. And there was always plenty of food to go around, just like the love that she showed to all who were close to her.
She is survived by her husband of over 50 years, Jack, her three children, Julie, Troy, and Todd (Wife, Jodi), her three grandchildren, Cole, Emily and Charlotte, her great grandson Jace, and her sister Shirley. They will miss her infectious laugh, her quirky sense of humor, her sense of adventure, her steadfast devotion to family, and most of all, having her amazing presence in their lives.
A memorial service will be held at the office of Rock Creek Church in Prosper, Tx at 2860 Fishtrap Rd, on May 7th at 11am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Lupus Research Alliance.
