Joyce's obituary

Joyce Evelyn Payne, age 86, a devoted mother, grandmother, and tireless servant of God, passed away peacefully on December 29, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, resilience, and faith. Born in Blacksburg, Virginia, to Elizabeth Mills, Joyce was the eldest of ten children.

Joyce’s journey took her from Virginia to New York before she returned to Pennsylvania to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). She was a mainstay of the healthcare community, providing comfort to patients in hospitals and private homes. Her work ethic was fueled by the love she had for her daughter and grandchildren.

A woman of deep faith, Joyce loved the Lord and reflected Christian values—humility, kindness, and service. She was a dedicated member and pillar of the Hillside Seventh-day Adventist Church, serving her congregation and patients with grace. To know Joyce was to be nurtured. She was the compassionate heart of her family, always putting others first. She was also known for her hospitality and her famous pound cake that "tasted like heaven."

She was preceded in death by her mother Elizabeth Mills and brothers Harold Edward Mills, William H. (Sonny) Mills, and Earl Mills. She is survived by her daughter Dorita Payne (James Hurdle); grandchildren: Shakia (Christopher) Crumbie, Akai Rosario, Evian, and Larrian Payne; and great-grandchildren: Akai Jr., Kaishaun, Miloni, Melitah, Samari, Ky’Seir, Mirah, Ramaya, Marquice, and Masai. Joyce is also survived by her loving sisters: Carol Evans, Ethel McDonald (Larry), Elizabeth (Richard) Washington, Brenda Mills and a host of family members.
