Joyce's obituary
On a quiet morning, January 3, 2021, Joyce Doris (Lundgren) McDonald, age 90, passed away peacefully in Coldwater, Mississippi, in the presence of her loving family. She was born on July 17, 1930 in Bridgeport, CT., daughter of the late Hans and Amelia (Ayles) Lundgren. She grew up in Stratford, CT., and graduated from Stratford High School. She worked as an usherette in the Stratford Theatre where she would meet her future husband of 63 years, James McDonald Sr.
After moving to San Jose, California while her husband attended college following World War II, she moved back to Stratford, and then settled in Trumbull, CT., where she would raise her five children. Mrs. McDonald worked for many years at St. Vincent’s Medical Center as the chief switchboard operator, then as a switchboard operator at St. Joseph’s Manor in Trumbull until her retirement. Over the years, she enjoyed homes in Vershire, VT., Port St. Lucie, FL., Monterey TN., and finally settled in Coldwater, MS.
More than anything, Joyce was proud of her family. She was a loving wife, mother and loved to boast about all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a great conversationalist and could make a friend anywhere. Joyce was an excellent “tour guide” when taking trips with her family and was never without her pink lipstick and matching nail polish. She will be greatly missed by those she left behind.
Joyce is survived by her son, James McDonald Jr. of Cookeville, TN., daughters, Jacquelyn (Carl) Wolf of Clinton, CT., Jill (William) Collins of Hinsdale, NH., Jennifer (Kelly) McGray of Coldwater, MS.; grandchildren, James E. McDonald III, Eric McDonald, Michael Wolf, Katie Browne, William Collins, Casey Fitzpatrick, Sean Collins, Bryan Winterhalder, Sr., Meghan Winterhalder, Kelly Valderrama, Carly Winterhalder, Ashley Caravalho, Molly Egge, David McGray, Rachel McGray, Tucker McGray, River McGray and Eilish McGray; great-grandchildren, Daniel and Emma Wolf, Maeve and Isla Browne, Aidan Fitzpatrick, Bryan Winterhalder, Jr., Mikalya and Jaxson Winterhalder-Lanzara, Eli, Vivian and Jenna Valderrama, Elliott and Jonah Caravalho, and Micah and Madeline Egge. She is also survived by her loving niece Mary Jane Newell, and son-in-law Paul Winterhalder and daughter-in-law Bonnie Ridgway.
She was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, James E. McDonald Sr., daughter, Dr. Joy E. Winterhalder, granddaughter Kimberly McDonald, brothers Hans and Kenneth Lundgren, and beloved dog Daisy.
Funeral services will be private and at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital or charity of choice in Joyce’s memory. Rodgers Funeral Home in Coldwater, MS., is in charge of arrangements.
