Joy's obituary
Our dear daughter, sister, aunt, friend, and colleague Joy Marie Brokopp passed on from this life and is now truly free and reunited with her mom in heaven. She was 49 years old.
Joy will be remembered for her fierce love and her unstoppable sense of humor. She was a woman of prayer, just like her mom, and she shared her heart through her beautiful paintings, sketches, and the hilarious, custom-written lyrics she would create for every birthday.
As a daughter, Joy’s devotion to her parents, John and Faith, was unwavering. She lovingly welcomed them into her home, filling their lives with laughter and ensuring they had everything they needed. After her mom’s passing, her dad's remarriage to Carolyn, and move to Omaha, Joy's incredible care continued through daily phone calls, her love bridging any distance.
As a sister, Joy was a constant source of deep, joyful laughter. She loved to have fun and always made spending time together a priority. She was fiercely loyal and incredibly generous, giving sacrificially of her time and heart. You always knew that if you called, she would be there in a second, her concern for others overriding everything else. Her ability to stay positive was truly uplifting. She had a beautiful way of erasing the 'in-law' from 'sister-in-law,' treating us like sisters and being so generous with her 'I love yous.'
As an aunt, Joy was a safe haven for her nieces, Charity, Bella, and Julia, and her nephews, Sam, Isaiah, Oliver, and Isaac. Her world truly revolved around them, and she was an incredibly faithful presence in their lives, filling her weekends cheering from the sidelines of their soccer, volleyball, and football games. The sacred bond she created as a present and praying aunt—built on love, support, and godly influence—will last with them forever.
As a friend, Joy was a rare gem—genuine, fiercely protective, and unconditionally giving. She would drop everything to help someone in need, offering support without a hint of judgment. Her upbringing in Africa gave her a unique perspective; she understood that true happiness came from connection, not material things. This made her the perfect partner for any adventure, which was always guaranteed to be filled with laughter. She loved to give, and her gifts were as thoughtful and specific as her friendship—a reflection of how she loved you for exactly who you are.
As a colleague, for 20 years, Joy dedicated her professional life to being a compassionate Oncology Nurse, serving at York Hospital for six years before joining the WellSpan York Cancer Center. To her colleagues, she was a kind and dedicated professional who built strong, trusting relationships with patients and staff alike. With a unique ability to understand different cultures, she treated every person with profound respect and kindness, regardless of their circumstances. Joy also had a special gift for making everyone smile, using her sharp wit and perfectly-timed sarcasm to bring moments of light to even the most challenging days.
Her infectious laughter and fierce, unconditional love have left an indelible mark on all of our hearts, and the world is undoubtedly a little less bright without her in it. We will honor her memory by living as she did—with unwavering faith, selfless generosity, and a spirit of joy that could light up any room.
