Joshua's obituary

Joshua David Smothermon left his earthly body on December 31, 2021 in Columbus, OH. Born on October 1, 1977 to Tammy Denton and David Smothermon in Memphis, TX, Joshua proved tenacious from the start. He had a fighting spirit and a will to live life by his rules.

That same spirit afforded Joshua a longer life than most would have thought. In his early years, Joshua battled epilepsy, a disease of the brain which causes severe seizures. Over time, the frequency and severity of his seizures threatened his life. He underwent five brain operations in order to save him. The final operation removed two-thirds of his brain’s right hemisphere, resulting in the partial paralysis of his body’s left side. Joshua was 17 years old when he had to learn to live in a lesser abled body.

In this new and perilous chapter of his life, Joshua’s spirit fought on, overcoming the obstacles set forth by his disabilities. He married and lived happily ever after with the love of his life, Amy. Together they had two phenomenal children, James and Grace, who have made this world a better place and are Josh’s best legacy.

Joshua’s tenacity allowed him to excel as a husband and father. He loved being an entrepreneur and helping his neighbors and community. He gave generously of his time and ability. He endeavored to teach these qualities to his children.

He was a loving and charismatic son, brother, father, husband, and friend.

Joshua is preceded in death by his beloved grandparents, who shaped his life greatly. His heroes, Grandpa Mickey <Carter> and Papa Don <Smothermon>, as well as his loving Ginny <Janet Davis>, welcomed him to a glorious eternity.

Joshua is survived by his wife, Amy; his children and pride and joys, James (15) and Grace (10), whom he loved more than words can express.

He lived surrounded by the love of his family. His mother, Tammy Denton, ensured against all barriers that he received the best care and never lost his quality of life. He greatly admired his brother, Jordan, and sister, Winter, and was equally admired by them. He held the deepest respect for his son’s namesake and his step-father, James David Denton. He was also loved and will be missed by his father, David Smothermon, brother, Ashton, niece, Avery, and best friends, Christina, Earl, and Jeannie. His grandmothers, Grammy <Patsy Cother> and Lolita Smothermon, are celebrating the 44 years of pride Joshua added to their lives.
