Josh's obituary

Josh Aaron Longwell

June 7, 1977 – July 27, 2025

Josh Aaron Longwell knew how to beat everyone to the check, face challenges head-on, and show up when it mattered most. He fought long and hard and passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by his family, on July 27, 2025. He was 48 years old.

Josh was born in Sidney, New York, on June 7, 1977, and grew up in Masonville as the youngest son of Ronald Gregory and Barbara Jeanne (Stanton) Longwell.

After graduating high school, Josh enlisted in the United States Air Force, where he served honorably with tours in Iran, Kuwait, Iraq, and beyond. His service earned him several commendations, including the Air Force Achievement Medal with one device, the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with two devices, the NATO Medal, and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, all recognizing his skill, dedication, and exemplary service. He also received several other service and qualification-based honors, reflecting his discipline, marksmanship, and years of commitment to his country.

Following his military service, Josh pursued a career as an aircraft mechanic. For the past ten years, he worked with Southwest Airlines, where he earned the “Top Wrench” award—just one sign of the deep respect his colleagues had for both his technical expertise and his integrity. Alongside his unmatched work ethic, Josh was known for his dry humor, sharp wit, and the kind of camaraderie that made tough days lighter.

While Josh’s dedication showed in every aspect of his work, it was in his role as a husband and father that his heart shone brightest. When he met Jannissa V. Fowler in 2002, he not only fell in love with her, but also with her two children, Devin and Aspen. From day one, Josh never saw them as anything but his own. It was never about titles or technicalities—it was about love, loyalty, and showing up. He proudly gave them his name, but more importantly, he gave them his whole heart. In 2008, Josh and Jannissa welcomed their son, Jayden, completing the family that Josh so fiercely loved and protected. His devotion to his family was evident in every decision, every laugh, and every quiet act of care. He was their rock.

Josh found joy in life’s simple pleasures—riding his Harley, cheering on the Yankees, going to concerts, and playing card games with family. He was always busy with a project, never one to shy away from the honey-do list. Josh never missed a chance to make life more fun—he loved decorating the house for Halloween, fully embracing family-themed costumes, and always made sure even the dogs were dressed to match. It was these playful traditions and his joyful spirit that turned ordinary moments into cherished memories. He was the life of every get-together, making everyone feel welcome and at ease. With his quick wit and easygoing nature, Josh could always get a laugh and knew how to keep things light, even during life’s toughest moments.

Josh is survived by his beloved wife, Jannissa, and their children, Devin, Aspen, and Jayden; his parents, Ronald and Barbara Longwell; his brother, Paul Longwell; and many other cherished family members, including his mother-in-law, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

Per Josh’s wishes, cremation has taken place, and he will be laid to rest at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery. A private family memorial will be held at the cemetery, followed by a Celebration of Life at Josh and Jannissa’s home on August 30, 2025 at 1 pm, where friends and loved ones are invited to honor Josh in the way he would have wanted—together.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the St. Alphonsus oncology team—especially the nurses—as well as the Idaho Home Health & Hospice team, for their compassionate care and support throughout Josh’s journey.

He gave his all, loved with his whole heart, and left the world better just by being in it. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
