Joseph's obituary

Joseph Ting, 74, peacefully passed away at home on December 22, 2024.

Joseph was born and raised in Manila, Philippines. He attended Kuang Chi grammar school and Xavier High School in Green Hills. He conducted his undergraduate engineering studies at De La Salle College in Manila. Joseph came to the U.S. to earn his Masters in mechanical engineering, textile technology at M.I.T. (Cambridge, MA), which remained one of his proudest achievements.

Straight out of M.I.T., he was employed by Brier Manufacturing Co. (Providence, RI). After a couple of months he was sent to manage their Canadian plant in Aylmer PQ, Canada where he was determined to add French to his language repertoire which already included: Mandarin Chinese, Tagalog, Spanish, and English. In 1975, he joined the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) in Ottawa. After finishing a research project on Rolls-Royce gas turbines at NRC, his team was invited to visit the plant in England in 1977. Wanting to visit France and Italy as well, Joseph decided to expand his trip. While visiting  the famous Pope’s Palace in Avignon, France, he met Monique. They were married in 1978.

Joseph devoted countless hours to his job and to his professional organization, American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), eventually becoming the Director and Regional Chair of Region I. Joseph was also an adjunct professor - first at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (Troy, NY) and then at University of Hawai’i - Manoa. He enjoyed teaching and stayed in touch with as many former students as he could.

Joseph loved talking to strangers and was famous for his lectures filled with creative - sometimes colorfully worded - acronyms.

Joseph is survived by his wife Monique, children: Audrey (Zachary) Schmook and William (Alexis) Ting; grandchildren: Loki, Layla, and Jocelyn; sisters: Cecilia Ting Tan, Emiliana Ting, Brigida Ting Lee, Florence Ting Hunt; and brothers: Anthony Ting, Jerome Ting, Jorge Ting, and Jeffrey Ting.

He is predeceased by his parents Manuel and Lourdes Ting; sisters: Marie Virgie Ting Bata, Annie Ting Ang; and Noemi Ting Donado; and brother Johnny Ting.

No public services will be held at this time. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in his memory to Hawaii Care Choice of Hilo (formerly Hospice of Hilo).
