Joey's obituary

Joseph William Striplin “Joey” passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 10th, 2021 at the age of 52 in his hometown Tallahassee, Florida surrounded by family and friends. Despite many physical ailments, Joey lived a life full of laughter, love, and friendships that will never be forgotten. Born on October 19th, 1968 in Marianna, FL, the youngest of six children born to Jim and Dorothy Striplin, he developed a love for the game of football that would ultimately shape the direction of his life. He played quarterback for Lincoln high school where he graduated in 1986 and extended his career at the position for a season at Valdosta State in 1987. From there he followed his father into coaching and enjoyed a career that lasted the remainder of his life. Coach “Strip” made a lasting impression on countless athletes and young people and was known for his jovial demeanor, high-powered offenses, and in particular his passing schemes. He began his career as an assistant at his alma mater Lincoln High School, then enjoyed ten outstanding years coaching quarterbacks at Panama City Rutherford (1990-1999). From there he headed to Indianapolis for a five-year stop at Cardinal Ritter where he coordinated the offense all the way to a state championship in 2003. He also had stints at South Port and Lawrence Central while in Indiana. Joey returned to the area to begin his head coaching career which included stops at Aucilla Christian and Robert F. Munroe. Next, he took the head coaching position at West Gadsden where he recorded his most successful season as head coach, leading his 2016 team to a 10-2 record which included a district championship and a regional semifinal appearance. Joey’s final stop was at Gadsden County where he was chosen to lead the newly formed school in 2018. Although football was a big part of his life, his greatest achievements were without a doubt the development of his faith in Jesus Christ and the relationships he built with family and countless friends. During his last six months, he enjoyed time with his granddaughter Evie and took pride in his new nickname, “Pop.” Without question, those who knew Joey will remember him for one of two things. Either Joey laughing, or Joey making them laugh. He is survived by his daughter Evann, and granddaughter Evie, brothers Jim and Sam, sisters Kim and Tammy, and numerous nieces and nephews. A celebration of Joey’s life will be held at Saint Paul’s Methodist Church (3431 County Rd 36 Hartford, AL) on Friday, April 16th @ 2 pm Central time. There will be a gathering of family and friends at the home of nephew Jim Bob Striplin immediately afterward (311 Rose Ave Hartford).
