Joseph Rivera, age 63 of Gary, passed away Monday, September 25, 2023. He was born on September 9, 1960, in Gary, Indiana to the late Juan and Maria Rivera. Joe was an electrician by trade and retired due to a disability. He then worked as a security guard for Allied Universal at the GE plant in Munster. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, Hobart Chapter and ABATE of Indiana. He was loved by everyone he met.

He is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Sonia Rivera; siblings, Robert (Leanne) Rivera, Carmen Adams, Samuel (Anna) Rivera, Margaret (Terry) Leytham, Elizabeth (Eric) Atkins, Jacqueline (Scott) Shroyer, Thomas (Lolita) Rivera, Susan (Marco) Rivera-Molinaro; sisters-in-law, Lisa Rivera, Sylvia (Joe) Kramer; brother-in-law, Alex (Michal) Nokovic; and many loving nieces, nephews, family members, friends, and two biological children.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Juan and Maria Rivera; siblings, Juan Rivera, Myrta Barriffe, Anna Rivera, Michael Rivera; and niece, Katie Atkins.

A prayer service for Joe will take place Wednesday, October 4, 2023, at 6:00 pm at Rees Funeral Home, Hobart Chapel, 600 West Old Ridge Road, Hobart with Rev. Dominic Bertino officiating. Visitation will be held from 2:00 pm until the time of service at the funeral home. Per Joe’s request, cremation will follow services.
