Celebration of Life: Joseph Patterson

Joseph Patterson, a devoted father, grandfather, sibling, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully on

Thursday, February 29th, 2024, at the VA Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. He was 66 years old.

Joseph was born on May 15, 1957, in Heth, Arkansas, to Jerry Charles Williams and Mildred Lee Hogan-Patterson. He held the memory of two special mothers who raised him as their own: Ida Mae Glover and Jodie Marie Williams.

Joseph cherished his large, extended family, including his Twelve Sisters and Two Brothers.

Building a Large and Cherished Family

Joseph's life was enriched by three marriages and a beautiful, blended family:

• He married Ruth Helen Latin in El Paso, Texas, a daughter was born to their union, Jo Elana Patterson, and he graciously embraced Ira Jr., Michael, Narvey, Robert, Carloyn, and Linda as his own.

• While living in Memphis, he married Mae Birtha Thomas, and embraced both Dameon and Dwan.

• Lastly, in Memphis, he met and married Dorothy Lamarell Meeks. Their union brought forth another daughter, Beyonca Jolyn Patterson, and he attained Demetria.

A Proud Veteran and Lifelong Learner

Joseph graduated from Earle High School in 1975 and proudly served his country in the U.S. Army for five years. During his service, he honed his skills in maintaining military vehicles at Fort Bliss (Logan Heights), Texas. He was then stationed in Baumholder, Germany. During his service he earned several recognitions, including the Good Conduct Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, and Expert Badge. He received an honorable discharge at the rank of Specialist (E-4) in 1985. Driven by a thirst for knowledge, Joseph pursued certifications in Telecommunication and Installation, HVAC, and Electrical at Arkansas Community College in West Memphis. His lifelong quest for learning led him to Shelby State University, where he earned an Engineering Degree.

A Successful Career and Helping Hand

Joseph embarked on a successful career path, starting with Block Drug Company in Memphis before joining his family's business with his brothers. Even in retirement, his passion for service continued. He generously shared his expertise, repairing vehicles, and servicing air conditioning units for those around Memphis.

Leaving a Legacy of Love

On February 29th, 2024, Joseph passed away peacefully from complications of heart failure. He leaves behind a cherished legacy, forever remembered by his daughters, Jo Elana-Patterson Hunt (Houston, TX) and Beyonca Patterson (Seattle, WA), his granddaughter Tyra Amya-Andrea Patterson (Houston, TX), and his grandson Brycen Andrew Patterson Hunt (Houston, TX).

He is survived by five sisters, Darthy Trice (Memphis, TN), Charleen Williams-Hale (Hope, AR), Patricia Ann Johnson (West Memphis, AR), Ruby Williams-Jefferson (Nashville, AR), and Rose Williams-McKillion (Hope, AR), one brother, Carl Stokes (West Memphis, TN) and a special nephew Lewis Jermaine Udell of Memphis, TN.

He is also survived by his loving brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, former stepchildren and a host of dear friends and extended family members.

Remembering a Kind and Caring Soul

Joseph will be remembered for his unwavering love for his family, the way he affectionately gave nicknames and coined phrases like “honey child”, his dedication to hard work, and his gentle spirit. He was a kind and caring soul who will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, watching his sports teams win, a good slice of bacon, and a cold beverage, Cheers!
