Joseph's obituary
Joseph Ignatius Mackle
April 25, 1927 – February 16, 2026
Joseph Ignatius (“Joe”) Mackle was born in Philadelphia to Daniel Edward Mackle and Helen (Brankin) Mackle on April 25, 1927. He had four siblings that predeceased him, Dan, Maggie, Helen and John. His father died when he was a toddler, and his mother when he was a teen. The five siblings banded together to make it in this world. And they did!
His wife was Margaret “Peggy” McAuliffe, whom he nicknamed “Poopsie”, a name he picked up from an old radio show. She lived in the same Philly neighborhood, and he first saw her when she was 13 and so, as he told the story, he had to wait for her to grow up to marry her. Theirs was a love story for the ages!
Peggy was his true love and the only woman he ever dated. They were married for 72 years. Sadly, Peggy passed away January 2025, and Joe missed her terribly.
Joe joined the Navy at the age of 17 to serve in WWII and he specialized in radar. He transported supplies to, and injured soldiers from, Japan. He was discharged from the service in 1946 after the conclusion of the war.
He had a career in large vehicle maintenance – the man could fix ANYTHING and always did! Joe had strong math and mechanical skills and retained them his entire 98 years.
Joe and Peggy had five children in 10 years: Eileen, Joe, Don, Nancy and David, and an assortment of pets, in a home full of love and fun in a big old farmhouse in Voorhees, New Jersey.
Peggy and Joe followed their dreams. Well into their 40’s, with their two eldest kids on their own, they packed up the three youngest children and moved to Stuart, Florida. They loved motorcycles and each had their own, and greatly enjoyed the warm weather.
In their 60s, Peggy and Joe relocated once again, this time across the country to Meadow Park in Corvallis. They wanted be closer to their growing number of grandchildren – nine in all – Kyle, Ryan, Joe, Ryan, Sean, Will, Patrick, Shannon and Connor. Known as “Grampy” from then on, by just about everyone, Joe greatly enjoyed time with the grandkids and his beloved cat, Linus. He also loved his mac computer and relished tinkering with anything electronic.
Joe was blessed with five great grandchildren – Olivia, Noah, Roman, Callen, and John Henry. He was thrilled when any of them came to Meadow Park to visit.
Joe loved animals, especially cats and dogs, and enjoyed them when they visited him in his later years. He had a great sense of humor and, while technically he was an introvert, he enjoyed the company of people, almost as much as dogs and cats!
Joe will be remembered for his sense of humor, his mechanical genius, and his love of family, especially Peggy. He will be missed by his family who will try not to mourn but will celebrate a life well lived.
At Joe’s request, there will be no memorial. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to your local hospice or humane society.
