Joseph's obituary

A bright soul, loyal friend, culinary master, daring opportunist and loving father, husband, and brother.

Joseph Howard Dunbar passed away peacefully though unexpectedly at his home in Waimea, Hawaii in November 2020 at the age of 62.

Though cut too short, he lived a beautiful life and leaves a large legacy behind. Joseph was born October 17, 1958 in Hilo, Hawaii to Howard and Joanna Dunbar. He grew up with his parents and two siblings, Sally and David, in Hawaii before moving to Palm Desert, California and later Providence, Rhode Island where he attended Johnson and Wales culinary school.

He spent much of his adult life in the Bay Area, California, where he was a loved and accomplished member of the culinary community. He owned and operated acclaimed Joseph Dunbar Catering before opening Kitchen 388 in Oakland.

His sense of adventure, contagious positivity, unmatched humor and big heart attracted a large community of family, friends and loved ones that he leaves behind. He is survived by his wife, Monika (Oakland, California), two daughters, Lily and Ruby (Oakland, California), sister Sally (Rancho Santa Fe, California), brother David (Hilo, Hawaii), spunky dog, Henry (Oakland, California) and incredible friends and loved ones.

We hope to come together and celebrate his life with family and friends when it is safe to do so.
