Dr. Joseph's obituary

We announce with deep sorrow the death of our beloved Father, Grandfather, Cousin, Uncle, Brother, and Friend;

Dr. Joseph Jones Adzimah. His kind heart, sharp mind, generous spirit, and jovial wit will be sorely missed. Please join us in celebrating his life.

Obituary:

Dr. Joseph Jones Adzimah was born to Martin Kofi Adzimah and Maria Wuikpor on January 27th, 1937 in Gbi-Abansi, Hohoe, Ghana.  Along with his brothers and first cousins, he was raised in the home of his grandfather, Togbe Adzimah II.  In his youth, he and the neighborhood children loved playing football (soccer), often using discarded tennis balls.  He also enjoyed scouting activities and serving at mass.

Dr. Adzimah attended Roman Catholic Boys School (RC Boys) in Hohoe. Thereafter, he obtained admission to St. Augustine College at Cape Coast, Ghana to further his education and completed his secondary education in 1956.  Afterwards, he worked in Accra, Ghana for a year before receiving a scholarship to study medicine at Glasgow University (Scotland).  He successfully completed his medical studies and became a general physician and Cardiology Specialist.  Dr. Adzimah then worked in London for a while before heading to Canada and eventually settling in the U.S.A.

While in the U.S.A. he established his own practice on Eastern Parkway in Brooklyn, NY; a thriving community in which he was able to provide care and service to his fellow Africans, African-Americans, and West Indians for decades. His warmth, intellect, and passion for providing medical care made him a beloved member of the community, and a friend to many of his colleagues and patients.

Although he was a very hardworking and busy man, he always made time to spend with loved ones, and proudly raised five sons. His home in Scarsdale, NY was a welcome respite for friends and family across the diaspora, and it was always a lively gathering place. His generosity, hospitality, and merry spirit knew no bounds.

When he was home for vacation at Hohoe, his home literally became an extension of his clinic in Brooklyn.  Early in the morning even before he woke up, lots of people, particularly relatives would queue up at the house . Reason? They were all there seeking address to their ailments. He never complained and attended to all of them one by one until he had seen every last patient.  After all of that, he would still find some time to visit other relatives and friends. Sometimes we wondered if he had come back to Ghana for vacation or if he had just come to continue his work as usual.

Dr. Adzimah retired well into his later years and settled in with family.  In his old age, he eventually fell ill and sadly passed away.  Despite his illness, Dr. Adzimah never lost his contagious ability to laugh.  He maintained his positive outlook on life, an open and giving heart, and shared many precious moments with his children, grandchildren, and beloved Vencia Williams.

He has made so many lives better and we shall forever miss him.  It is comforting to know that he is in good company with our ancestors that have preceded him.  May the Lord grant his soul eternal rest.
