It has been one year since we have lost you in life but not in mind and soul. You are forever with us. Wishing you were here to cheer us on and encourage us to find better ways to do things. To play chess with your grandchildren. We are forever surrounded by your light.

Dear Maricel,

Once Alex asked me about his father and our family.
I pondered what to say. Eventually I started by saying he was the only grandchild of our grandfather Jose.
My mind went back to perhaps recounts or first-hand witness accounts of father, grandfather and Jose Manuel looking at constellations at the Valencia orange farm while looking at book and deciphering the Venezuelan sky (and this last piece comes from my sister’s recollection) and him saying “according to my calculations…”
Yes. We (as I supposed Veronica was there too) felt a little invisible, and well, it was like that for a long while. I even remember asking dad if grandpa loved us. He said “of course”, but being a logical person as he was, he elaborated and then corroborated our suspicion.
Well…, I said then to Alex: “he was the only grandchild of our grandfather. We should’ve hated him. But we did not. “
He was ruthlessly direct. He was pragmatic and materialistic. He was always on the side of self-reliance with little patience for else. Yet, he couldn’t help to have the big heart that our eldest uncle (whom we never knew) died for.
Jose will seek us. Talk to us. He was aiming to be a millionaire at twenty. Played guitar. Learned Karate when it was not fashionable. Travel and worked all over the world understanding different cultures and always came back to talk to the uncles (his mother, my dad, Celia, Margot) and to us, the invisible grandchildren; His cousins. (Primazo!, he used to call me). Family was important to him!
It has taken me a while to think he will not pop-up at my door announcing he just got a gig on my hometown.
He took over. He made himself to be our grandpa. He made the bridge and gather all that love in a pragmatic way. I still think that he will show at the door someday to tell us he is moving in our town for yet another six-month gig (his love for working must come from his other side of the family, not form the Rodriguez for sure!).
I’ll wait eagerly. I know some how I’ll see our substitute grandfather soon. In the meantime, he will be missed for sure!
We love you. See you soon!

Always grateful for the advice and guidance received from José when we arrived in the city of Montreal. A photo of memory, with a group of Peruvian friends, many of them in IT,
Jose is always remembered as …
Jose is always remembered as one of the very few that enriches all our lives.

I will miss him, yet follow his example of enjoying this life we have.

1996-1997 I first met and worked with Jose in Saudi Arabia... here is a photo of us out and about in Saudi at that time.
