Jory's obituary
In memory of Jory Farr, who departed this life on July 13, 2023. Born in 1952, Jory lived an incredible life that included a rich mix of academia, journalism, authorship, and a deep affection for family, culture, and travel.
Jory's early years were filled with intellectual curiosity and a passion for writing, traits that led him to the University of California Santa Cruz where he graduated with a BA in English in 1975. His thirst for knowledge didn't stop there, as he went on to earn a Masters Degree in Journalism from Northwestern University Medill School of Journalism in 1982. Throughout his life, Jory remained a lifelong learner, always eager to explore new ideas and perspectives.
Jory made significant contributions in the world of journalism and writing. His vast body of work attests to his depth and breadth as a writer. His biggest professional achievements were as a Pulitzer Prize finalist, followed by two critically acclaimed nonfiction books, along with numerous fiction books, short stories, and poetry. On top of these achievements, he authored thousands of newspaper columns over his long career as a professional journalist, providing insightful perspectives on a variety of topics and issues. He enjoyed many years as a music and pop culture critic, following his passion for music by reviewing established acts from around the world and interviewing artists.
Though his accomplishments were many, those who knew Jory best would often describe him as funny, smart, intellectual, and deep. His talent for and love of playing the guitar was so profound that he played for family and friends whenever he could, and gladly taught several family members and friends to play. He imparted wisdom and care with a gentle reserve, always ready to share a laugh, a story, or a life lesson. He always tried to embody the qualities and values he held dear: love, compassion, and kindness.
Jory's greatest joy and proudest achievement were his three wonderful children, Zachary, Joshua, and Hannah (Hudson) Farr. He was, above everything else, a family man. His legacy is one of deep love for his children, enriched with tales of traveling and exploring European countries with his children and many beautiful hikes through nature. He dedicated his time and efforts to spending time with those who mattered most to him, especially his children.
While Jory's loss is deeply felt, he is survived by his beloved children and his brother, Evan Farr (and his wife Jeannie). He joins his parents, Beatrice Farr (https://everloved.com/life-of…) and Marshall Farr (https://everloved.com/life-of…) in the eternal afterlife. As we remember Jory, we honor his life and contributions, cherishing the moments and memories made.
