Jon's obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Jonathan Eric "Jon" Sisk, who left us on August 7, 2024. Born in Richmond on May 26, 1956, Jon's life was characterized by a strong work ethic, an impish charm, and a wry sense of humor, and he left an indelible mark on those fortunate to know him. He was preceded in death by his parents, James C, Sisk and Sarah Rebecca (Hodnett) Sisk, and is survived by his daughter, Sarah Brynne Kribs of Dallas, three grandchildren, Caden, Colten, and Camdyn Kribs of Dallas, and three brothers, Michael (Alba) of San Diego, David (Margery) of Lanexa, VA. and Phillip of Richmond. He also leaves behind numerous cousins, nephews, and nieces who cherished him and will miss him dearly.
Jonathan also touched hundreds of other lives in his career as an author, trainer, editor, and publisher specializing in the Pick "MultiValue" Data Model, now commercially known as D3, whose on-line help is still based upon his work. The Pick System was named for one of the developers, Richard "Dick" Pick, who initially developed it in 1963 for use in inventory control by the US Army. It was commercially released in the 70's by the Microdata Corporation where Jon was working at the time. Jon soon became a trainer for Pick and then left Microdata to open his own Pick training company, JES & Associates, in Newport Beach, CA. at the age of 27. For the rest of his life, Jon was known as THE expert on this operating system. He was the author or editor of The Pick Collection, a unique library of 28 books, guides and historical documents devoted to this database that are still in use today. In the late 90's, Jon sold JES to the company that acquired Pick and retired at the age of 44 to live a simpler life with a succession of loyal dogs. Over the next 25 years, he pulled a camper around the country, with extended stays in Durango, CO, Richmond, VA, Bradenton, FL, and, finally, Ashland. He was still in demand as a trainer during his retirement years and made many on-site visits to clients located around the globe, most recently in London.
A reception to honor Jonathan's life will be held on Saturday, September 14 from 1-3 PM in the Fellowship Hall at Derbyshire Baptist Church (8800 Derbyshire Road, Henrico). A second reception will be held on Sunday, September 15 from 1-3 PM in the clubhouse at the Americamps RV Resort (11322 Air Park Rd, Ashland, VA) where Jon lived for the last years of his life with his loving Labradoodle, Harley. At this stop in his journey, Jon met and enjoyed the company of many new friends who were either permanent residents there or temporary visitors who passed through his life. Both events will be live-streamed on Zoom for those who are unable to attend in person. The link and password for these events are below. In lieu of flowers, Jon would have appreciated a donation to an animal shelter or charity of your choosing.
