I am still not believing this. I am so very sorry that this happened. Whenever i was around him, we were always laughing about something. He will be missed by many. My prayers and thoughts go to Sue and David, and all the family as well.

I've been putting this post off for a few days but I think it's probably time to share it.

Many of my high school friends knew my cousin Jon Vanover. Jon and I were notorious for tearing up the roads in Alief and spent many Friday and Saturday nights together racing on Westheimer. Some of my best memories growing up were with Jon. We were either cruising in my Nova SS or Jon's Camaro, usually finding some kind of trouble to get into. We'd hit all the usual spots.....Great Skate, Jack in the Box parking lot, Good Time Charlies in Sharpstown, etc. Jon was one of the toughest guys I knew. He loved the gym and worked out religiously, and he was someone that wouldn't take crap off anyone. But he was also someone that would stop in the pouring rain to help change a tire or try and help fix a car. Complete strangers usually. Most of the trouble I got into growing up involved Jon in some aspect, but looking back compared to today's world, it was all pretty innocent fun that most kids about to reach adulthood go through.

We were cousins but I think we were more like brothers. Growing up it was Jon and I that would spend a week every summer with our grandparents. Riding bikes, building ramps and forts, sneaking away where we weren't supposed to and driving grandma crazy.

Jon was one of my groomsmen when Anita and I got married. I knew it really wasn't his thing....getting dressed in a Tuxedo, having to chill his toughness while having a boutonniere pinned on, posing for pictures, etc. He sucked it up though and handled it all just fine, much to my relief. (I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little worried.) ;o)

Life moved forward, we both kind of went our separate ways with our own families and work, but we'd still get together on holidays and special occasions, but even those started to be fewer and farther between. Seemed to be the only time we'd see each other was at a funeral or some somber occasion. Each and every time we'd talk about needing to get together again and catch up, and rekindle the friendship we had. Regretfully that never happened.

We lost Jon this past week. He leaves behind a close family, and a daughter and 3 grandkids, who are gonna miss him very much.

I'd love to be able to have just one more Saturday night, cruising Westheimer in fast car, six pack of beer in the back seat, and some AC/DC blasting from the stereo. I'm gonna miss you Jon, rest in peace my brother.
