Jon's obituary

Jon Glenn Thompson

Affectionately, called Cherokee or Waya Nvwodi by his friends.

Age 74 Westminster, South Carolina

Born 11/02/1949 in Saratoga Springs, NY

Died January 22, 2024

From complications of an accident, he had weeks before on Coffee Rd. Westminster, SC.

Cherokee was a restless spirit in his early life and wandered across the country. He eventually settled down in Westminster, SC. Where his love for the outdoors and nature steered him towards a career in agriculture. There in Westminster he came across a local farmer, Ralph Lee, who took him under his wing and taught him everything he knew about farming. Ralph also gave Cherokee a home and Ralph’s family became Cherokee’s as well.

Cherokee loved everything Native American and eventually decided to walk the Red Road where he dedicated himself to worshiping the Creator. It was in this spiritual endeavor that he came across Jimi Preston. Jimi also wanted to walk the Red Road so Cherokee passed on all the knowledge he accumulated over his long walk on the Red Road. This was no easy feat, so to help Jimi learn the ways of the Red Road Cherokee moved in with Jimi’s family, his wife and two stepsons. They lived and learned together for nearly two years, becoming more than friends, they became brothers. In turn adding his wife and kids to Cherokee’s surrogate family.

Cherokee enjoys teaching others so much so, that he took on another student, Rita Satterfield. Although he did not move in with her, the years of teaching and the bonds of friendship turned into more than friends, and he gained a spiritual sister. He didn’t just gain a spiritual sister he gained her whole family as well. Her mother, aunt, daughter, and grandson.

Besides farming, seeking spirituality, and teaching, Cherokee is a wildlife rescue advocate, an environmentalist, and a volunteer at the annual retreat Earth Worship Weekend.

Cherokee is preceded in death by his mother Sarah Fay Ingraham, his father Glen W Thompson, and Ralph Lee.

Cherokee is survived by his partner Tena Collins Fleming, roommate Lorelei, Ralph Lee’s family Margie Lee, Carol Hendrix and Larry Hendrix, Jimi Preston and his family, Donna Preston, Joshua Fick, and Hunter Fick, Rita Satterfield and her family Coyote, Tami Fowler, Jessica Satterfield, and Rowan Crowley, his fur babies Little Man and Loci, and his family members from his past and multitudes of friends.
