Johnny's obituary

With deep sorrow and cherished memories, we announce the passing of Johnny Nathan Bethay on February 27, 2025. He was a devoted husband to his beloved wife, Laverne Bethay, sharing 69 wonderful years together. A loving father of two, grandfather of eight, and great-grandfather of four, Johnny’s presence enriched the lives of all who knew him.

Born in Tupelo, Mississippi, in 1934, Johnny grew up in Aberdeen, where he attended Aberdeen High School. A natural athlete, he played both football and basketball while also working as a lifeguard at the county pool. His early years were marked by energy and determination—qualities that would shape his life and career.

Johnny’s professional journey was nothing short of remarkable. He served as a special investigator for the FBI and was a proud veteran of the 101st Airborne Division and Army Missile Defense. His expertise extended into nuclear engineering before he ultimately found his true calling in the insurance industry. As the founder and president of Coastal Associates Insurance Group, Johnny dedicated himself to representing hospitals throughout the southeastern United States, leaving a lasting impact on the field.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Johnny was an avid outdoorsman who found joy in hunting, fishing, and spending time in the mountains and on the water. Whether at the beach, lake, river, or mountains, he felt most at peace when surrounded by nature—especially when sharing those moments with family and friends. A true tinkerer at heart, he had an uncanny ability to fix anything with duct tape and ingenuity. More than anything, he took immense pride in providing for his loved ones and witnessing them enjoy life’s simple pleasures.

A memorial service and celebration of his life will be held on March 15, 2025, at 1:00 PM at Ridgecrest Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. Family and friends will gather to honor his memory and share stories of a life well lived.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Johnny’s honor—a fitting tribute to a man whose generosity knew no bounds.

Johnny’s legacy will live on through the love he shared and the countless lives he touched. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
