John's obituary
John Lee Wiegand, 68, Gladstone MO, passed away unexpectantly Saturday July 23, 2022 at North Kansas City Hospital.
John was born November 14, 1953 in Hutchinson KS, the son of Robert (Bob) and Mary (Heim) Wiegand. He grew up in South Hutchinson, KS and graduated in 1972 from Nickerson High School.
John met Jane Elizabeth Palmer in Wichita KS in 1982 and they were married April 27, 1985 in South Hutchinson KS United Methodist Church. They were married 37 wonderful years.
In Hutchinson, John worked for the local Anheuser-Busch wholesaler which led to him collecting AB steins and breweriana. After moving to Gladstone MO in 1988 for Jane’s job, John worked at the Hallmark Cards Distribution Center in Liberty MO for a few years. John’s last job was with the Ford Motor Company in Claycomo MO, assembling the F-150 and Escapes until he retired in 2012.
John was passionate about a few things: wife Jane, family, trapshooting, hunting, Anheuser-Busch breweriana, Harley Davidson motorcycles, North America travel, and the yard. He loved being retired.
John began trapshooting in 1984, shot in competitions in several states, and had plans to shoot in more events this year. He finished with a total ATA target count of 610,350. He was a lifetime member of: the NRA, American Trapshooters Association, Missouri Trapshooters Association, and Kansas City Trapshooters Association. On August 29, 1998, at KCTA at Smithville MO, John and four friends set the World Record for Registered Doubles targets shot in a single 24-hour period by a 5-man squad by shooting 5,500 registered Doubles targets each, for a total of 27,500 targets, and the record still stands. John would be thrilled with the recent announcement that he and the squad will have a display in the ATA Hall of Fame in Sparta IL.
John’s friends say that he never met a true stranger, and whether in person or online, he was a good friend to many. He had a tremendous impact on people’s lives and changed them for the better. He loved to talk, listen, offer advice, laugh, and could spin tales that very few could match.
John and Jane shared a passion for travel that took them to several Canadian Provinces and every State in the U.S., except for Hawaii, which they were planning to go to in the next year.
John is survived by wife Jane Wiegand Gladstone MO, sister Dana Schuler (Richard) Kansas City MO, brother Terry Wiegand (Barbara) South Hutchinson KS, sister-in-law Sue Caruso (Cary) Durham NC, brother-in-law James Palmer (Natalia) Conroe TX, and nieces.
John was preceded in death by his father Robert (Bob) Wiegand, mother Mary Wiegand Marshall, grandparents, and in-laws.
John’s memorial service will be Saturday August 20, 2022 in the Upper Room at Northland Christian Church 6120 NE 48th St. Kansas City MO 64119. Family and friends unable to attend can watch the 2:00 service via the church’s Zoom connection at http://ncckc.org/. Memorials can be given in memory of John Wiegand to the ATA Trapshooting Hall of Fame - Sparta, IL or Northland Christian Church – Hilltoppers (senior adults) fund. Arrangements are under direction of Cashatt Family Funeral Home, Platte Woods MO.
