This is your brother Tom, and I miss you a lot. I am sorry we didn't get to talk to you before you passed-but I will see you again in Heaven. I'm waiting to see you someday, brother. I smoke a good cigar for you on every anniversary.

Happy birthday John. 1st I'd like to share a memory of John. I know y'all knew him as Dr. Wayne. I know he was well respected among his fellow colleagues and family. I just knew him as John , my brother. John was 15 months older than me and trust me it was hard to follow him in school. That's another story. I was in the 5th grade and I was running in the basement and slipped on a pc of cardboard and cut my wrist on a garden hoe (rusty) . Blood was everywhere. So deep, you could see the fat in my arm. Here comes John running to my rescue with a bottle of rubbing alcohol and hydrogen peroxide and the 1st aid kit . He wanted to pour that rubbing alcohol on my arm, and I told him NO WAY!! I'm laughing and almost crying right now, he did help mom fix me up and take me to the hospital. I got 8 stitches out of that deal. Even then he was destined to be a Doctor. Last year I started to look for you bc I wanted to tell you that I'm sorry for being a terrible brother and I wanted too tell you I love you and I will miss you😪😪
P.S. I have many stories of me and John growing up. 1 day I'll tell you the story of "Howie P".

Missing John today wishing we could be celebrating his birthday🎂 together but instead he is celebrating in the presence of our Savior in Heaven 🌈

I was asked again about the scholarship fund at the American Society for Clinical Pathology and provide the link here if you are interested in honoring him that way. The profession lost a great man and this is a small way to help others in training to fill his very big shoes. Thank you 🙏💓https://everloved.com/life-of/john-wayne/donate/
Jana,
You must be an exceptional woman. I knew Wayne while growing up in Logan, Ohio. We were classmates and teammates on the track team. John was THE most determine individual I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. He was an inspiration to those who knew him. He competed in every track meet he was eligible for. He showed the grit that few had as a teenager. Not many medals, but he finished every race with his head held high and with unequaled dignity. Always there for his teammates with heartfelt congratulations and encouragement.
I am saddened at his passing and my sympathies are with you.

Respectfully,
Jim Waid

The Mountains are calling and I must go ~ John Muir
There are friendships that mark chapters in your life, and John was such a part of my California chapter. I met him at SDSU as I was taking post-bacc classes to (eventually) apply to PA school. We were the "older students" at the time. Perhaps that is why we bonded in the first biology class or John may have made a sly joke under his breath that I caught. I remember how wicked smart AND funny he was. We laughed a lot during our MANY study sessions.
He was at the VA working full time and doing school. Days and nights were long for him especially during PChem but he persisted. Med school was the goal at that time. It was not surprising that fellowships followed, I am certain he was an excellent pathologist.
John had met Jana shortly before my husband and I left Southern California. Of course, teasing him about "John" and "Jana" was too good to pass up. I knew he was serious!
Jana, I am so sorry that you lost your partner in life, but happy that you shared such an adventure.
Somehow, through the internet, John and I connected again. We exchanged stories about medicine and family and pets and paths. It was as if the years had been but a blink. It is the mark of dear friendship that despite years and distance, the connection sparks; I consider myself so fortunate. I will miss you my kind friend.
I knew John Wayne from Yokota, too. I'll look through some old pics for any to share. For memories, John's dry humor was a force to be reckoned with - always amusing, snarky, and perfectly timed. This is the saddest news. Our love to all those feeling this loss, especially his wife.

John Wayne was a Forensic Pathology Fellow in Miami where I worked as a staff pathologist. We immediately got along and became friends as well as colleagues. His tenacity to learn and his resourcefulness was unparalleled. He brightened the room with his sincere smile and comical humor. His love for his career was only surpassed by his love for Jana and his Faith. I am very saddened by his passing but joyful he is with God.
