I shared two private moments with John on this day. The first was descending Pinnacle Peak. We were setting up two parallel double rope rappels and I went first because I supposedly had the most rock experience. From the moment I threw the rope, things went wrong - ropes getting blown in the wind, stuck in rocks; knotted, etc. John went next and had the same issues as me. When we got together we commiserated with each other on our masterclass on what NOT to do. The second moment was when cleaning up Castle Peak. I had been perched on top grabbing summit photos of the students. Most people nervously stood next to the very exposed summit block for their quick picture. When I asked John to pose, he confidently jumped up and straddled the summit for this photo. I’m honored to have spent this last season getting to know you John. I’ll miss you!

2019, Mt Shuksan, Washington, USA
Dear John, I wish I could give you one big last hug. Thank you for being the person, mentor, and friend that you were to all of us. I consider myself so lucky that I got the opportunity to learn from you when I was a student in BMC. Joining the club as a non-Boeing member and as a female, was very intimidating. But you always made me feel so welcomed and made me feel like I belonged in this community. You went out of your way to ensure that I felt included. You were never impatient with me when I got scared. You always encouraged me to work harder and train more, so I could get faster. You were genuinely such an amazing mentor who genuinely cared about building up student’s confidence and ensuring that they always felt safe. I remember when I started to tear up on my grad climb because it got very spicy, and you helped calm me down and talk through my anxieties logically. You were like a dad figure to me in the club. I feel like I had the best team of dads - you, Dave & Dan. I felt so safe on your team and felt so safe learning from you. Thank you for all your advice over the years. I remember how you would laugh at all my ridiculous dating stories when I was single and when you found out that Chris & I were dating you came up to me and told me that you thought we were a great match because Chris is such a great guy. I will miss hearing stories about how much you loved Deb and how much you loved your family. You always brought her home a pie from Rainier weekends. I will miss hearing all your gear recommendations and how you literally had a leash for everything that was on your pack. I will miss talking about food with you - one of my favorite memories from my grad climb is shown in this photo of us making dinner together. I will miss receiving your emails inviting us to your climbing expeditions - Aconcagua, Denali, Entiat Sweep, etc. You always impressed me with how many climbs you planned and how you genuinely were so welcoming for your friends to join. You were one of the main reasons I came back to be an instructor. I will consider myself very lucky if I’m half as good as an instructor as you were to everyone. You were so patient, kind, loving, generous, hysterical, selfless and positive. I promise to always carry your Arctic John spirit in the mountains with me. See you in the hills.

For this year’s BOEALPS campout, I had the pleasure of sharing a delicious meal with John at Wildflour. We carpooled from the campsite together and reserved a spot in their outside table. John was the first to hop on plans for a group dinner on Friday night before team outings at various crags in the area the next day. When it was looking like we might not have space he volunteered to grab his own table so others could be in the igloo (but thankfully they let us squeeze one more in!). When I said they had igloos for reservation he responded jokingly that he “had an aversion to snow” 😂 John is patient, kind, and had a knack for bringing people together. Remembering you always through this silly selfie ♥️

I took this photo of John on his camera at our Leavenworth BMC outing. The smile shows how much he enjoyed teaching his students!
